Challenge: Lowest possible orbit around the sun without burning up!

Recommended Posts

Using less than 100 parts, I challenge you to get a low orbit around the Sun. My lowest orbit was 2km. Now, just try to beat that!

EDIT: Challenge closed. Too hard, plus people kept asking for proof.

I. Don't. Feel. Like. Going. To. That. Trouble. Right. Now.

You can't post a challenge that we can't verify that it isn't impossible to do, it in the challenge forum's rules. You have to do it and post pics OP.

Mostly an question about patience, Did an two kilometer orbit with an ion probe, used moded engines but doable with stock. Main issue with the 100 part requirement is that you have to use the big and heavy solar panel who will give you an low TWR.

Close to the sun, I think even a single OX-STAT panel will fully power an ion engine

Looking at my submission, I realize I could do much better: replace the mainsails with two stages of skippers, which allows converting struts to fuel. Mainsails need so many struts.

I could of course replace the triple LV-N setup with a single, but I was impatient: I couldn't tolerate much less than 1 TWR.

And had I properly calculated my burns, I could have ended with a circular orbit.

You don't need much so one option is to use nuclear to get close and switch to ion. Think I used 6000 m/s to get from LKO to low solar PE and 16.000 to circulate and lower it to 2km.

I remember around 25-30 km/s being required according to discussions in SunJumper's challenge in order to orbit low. It's very little difference between 1000km and 0km. You might as well be walking on the sun.

There aren't challenge rules, those are the challenge guidelines. You are encouraged, but not required to follow them. Indeed, challenges are often made simply to see whether ANYONE can do a given thing.
