host them on imgur or some other place then use the tool when posting to link them

Not really possible to reliably host images that way. Making an account there is no harder than when you made yours here. It's also completely free, so no worries of paying anything.

I don't think you have to be signed in to upload images to imgur... But I don't know how reliable the hosting is when you aren't (or if it's the exact same... :/)

The KSP forum servers simply can't host the thousands of images and videos that have already been produced (cost, code, maintenance). A hosting site is something completely different to do than a forum, and there's plenty of them, imgur being the most simple and user-friendly. Give it a try!

Use imgur, no sign up is required. If you want to know about reliability, I'll just say that I use it to host my signature.
