Locking parts in VAB, so they can't be moved?

Recommended Posts

Is there anyway to do this? When building larger ships and in particular adding struts, it would be great to be able to lock down a part so it can't be physically moved anymore. Otherwise wayward clicks wind up moving around various pieces and then you're veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery carefully trying to put everything back where it was.

Unfortunately at this time no, you really just have to learn to be a bit careful, hope undo works or save often. Those are the things that will save your work! Perhaps in the future they would do this, but I question how it would actually be implemented. Perhaps just swap the function of shift-click and regular click? It wouldn't be perfect but it would have a bit of desired effect by adding a 'safety' to your mouse.

Well shoot. Currently I just save a often, especially when placing struts, and force quit if an something large with many attachments is mistakenly clicked on.

Ctrl-Z to undo. Autosave is about every 5 seconds, so undoing a misplaced strut/picked up piece usually only undoes one or two items you've placed, depending on placing speed.

Whenever I pick up a whole booster/symmetry item I just delete it then hit undo. Usually isn't a problem at all.

Ctrl - Z is actually really handy. Last night I was building a 3 tank high 21 mainsail design (2 orange, 1 small silver, mail sail and all required strutting). I built the first 2 rocket addemblies with struts and all. Then I disconnected the 2nd built "child" rock and put it to the side. Then I hit Ctrl- z and it replaced the original rocket back onto the design but also let the entire faded out one I removed. I then (using symmetry) bolted that onto my rocket. Rinse and repeat and in 5 minutes I had 42 orange tanks, 21 hear sink small tanks, 21 main sailed and about 200 struts all identical.

It's basically a copy and paste feature and it can save loads of strutting time.

They could easily add an extra option in the action group settings menu. Every part could just have a "Lock position to parent" button. That part is really simple. Actually locking the position of objects to the parent without causing other problems seems like it would be more difficult.
