As you continue up the stairs, you think you hear faint sounds of breaking glass and rending steel below. As you reach the middle of the mud, you sink over the tops of the waders and mud flows in. You realize you're stuck, but you can, however, wade out of the mud without them on, so you do, and as you reach the edge of the mud, you see the waders disappear.
