Strange center of mass change at a certain point in launch

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to launch a rover to a space station but at a certain point in launch just before the SRBs run out of fuel it looks like the center of mass jumps to a certain point behind the ship. I can't see anything falling off the ship when this happens. I have a video of what happens below. Thanks.

Check the mission log and see if anything broke. Usually a shift in COM means a connection got busted. Also, I've found that if the TWR is higher than @2.4 you get a lot more busted rockets.

I had this problem in 0.19 even from Ships that worked perfectly in a previous Version. It seems that the G-Forces are too much for it to stay together as it broke right at the top of the Green Safe Spot. Try it again but keep that throttle down a little and see if it still does it.

It's difficult to tell with your camera zoomed out so far away from your ship. You might try shutting off the autopilot once you're up past 20,000; it looked like it got caught in a loop optimizing your ship's flight path. If that's a mod bug, flying it manually would be able to diagnose that and then you see if the developer has a fix for it.

Something in your ship, it are broked. I hate seeing the CG move forward. It means you're going back to the VAB.

Moar struts Werner!

Edit. Just watched the video. Sorry I should have done that first but it sounded too much like the broken ship thing. I had the almost same thing happen the other day. Not sure what triggered it. If the ship broke and then the first stage accelerated at like 6,000 G's or the ship broke because the first stage decided to accelerate at 6,000 G's.

Hasn't happened since though. Running half a dozen mods, MechJeb, Alarm Clock, Lazor docking camera, Fuel Balancer, ISA MapSat, Robotic Arms.

After it happened I ended the flight and the log only showed liftoff. The accelerometer shows about 1.65g when it happens. I tried separating the solid fuel boosters before it happened, then the ship continued on liquid fuel until it happened. The log doesn't mention anything small like the scientific instruments getting torn off.

It almost seems like a game bug, as if part of the rocket got pushed down and is several kilometers below the rest of the vehicle, but still attached to the rocket itself. Try launching various other stock rockets to see if they have the same kind of problem.
