Build a ship in orbit

Recommended Posts

I challenge someone to build a ship in orbit similar in method to the way Star Trek Space Docks operated.

  • No less than 75 parts in the orbital ship (the more the better)
  • No less than 5 part groups
  • You must provide pictures of each individual rocket launching
  • Another picture of the rocket in the VAB
  • A picture of each connection being made
  • A picture of the finished ship in flight.

I recommend using docking clamps for the connections.

Mods you can use:

  • Stock Parts
  • MechJeb
  • Kerbal Engineer
  • Engine & Fuel tank packs (within reason)
  • KSPX
  • Pirated Weaponry
  • ISA MapSat.

I am open to mod suggestions.

Point Breakdown:

  • Kerbol 4 points
  • Moho 3 points
  • Eve 2 points
  • Mun/Minimus 1 points
  • Duna 2 points
  • Dres 3 points
  • Jool 4 points
  • Eeloo 5 points
  • Star Trek Style 2 points
  • Aesthetics X/10
  • Number of parts X/10
  • Complexity X/10
  • Functionality X/10

These are some ideas for Star Trek STYLE ships

These should help clear stuff up.

I challenge someone to build a ship in orbit similar in method to the Star Trek Space Dock.

Perhaps you could explain what exactly you mean by this? You mention a similarity to modular space stations so what difference do you intend with your challenge? Are you simply wanting a modular spaceship that looks like a specific Star Trek ship?

  • I mean building ships by bringing pieces up from the surface putting them together in orbit.
  • By style I mean a Saucer Section with separate Nacelles, see the picture for an example.
  • The challenge is to make it space-worthy.
  • Bonus Points if you make it to another planet.

the picture helps, but I still don't understand.

Do you want us to build the Enterprise, or do you want us to build the space dock?

Does the ship have to get to another planet, or does the dock?

Is there some objective scoring formula for the "star trek style" category, or will you be assigning 0/1/2 points as you see fit?

I'm not really sure what the challenge is, here. Given the points you've listed, the winning score will be a "grand tour of the solar system" where we visit as many planets as possible with a giant orbit-built ship. but that doesn't seem to be what you're going for. There's already an active challenge like that, but it has a one-launch constraint that makes it... well... challenging.

The dock doesn't matter. You can build whatever design ship you want, it can be completely original. The only thing that matters is building the ship by flying parts from kerbal to orbit and attaching them there. I will be assigning 0/1/2 points as I see fit for the Star Trek ones. The formula for Star Trek ship is a Saucer like section with at least 2 nacelles. You can also build craft that resemble the runabout or other shuttles. The planetary points are a method to test its space worthiness.

You can have as many launches as desired, but they must be orbit built every time.

Ahem... may we see your attempt?

Sorry, I didn't see that part when I read through the rules. I would be glad to provide pictures, just tell me what you need? I cant really show a picture of it in orbit because I am terrible at doing anything in orbit and even if I do get something in orbit, I am never able to rendezvous with it. I know it can be done though because my challenge works on the same principle as modular space stations.

nevertheless, a read of the guidelines might be in order.

For instance, OP is asking what we need.. however it is your challenge OP, tell us what you need

I did say what was needed in the OP. I was asking him what he thought would be enough "proof". I had read the Guidelines, I just missed that part.

Most interplanetary missions are done this way already. :)

The only ship I know from ST is the Enterprise, can you post some pics of other ones for us to use as a guide?
