The COMPLETE KSP Blender Tutorial! [Video Back!]

Recommended Posts

While this video tutorial may or may not have useful information, I find the auto-pausing thing infuriating, to the point where the tutorial is utterly useless for me. Seriously, there are no words to express my rage right now. The video doesn\'t pause itself long enough for me to even read the information, let alone perform the actions in Blender, and when I try to pause it manually the damn speech bubble goes away! And when I try to jump to an earlier point to have the information repeated, the speech bubble doesn\'t appear at all. This is ridiculous. Get rid of that nonsense, please. Just let me pause the damn thing myself when I want to.

Ok, note taken. It might be a rainy week this week. So might get a chance to redo it all. :)

Oh, I\'ll have to brush up on all the recent changes. :o

Yeah... sorry about the tone of that. Like I said, I was incredibly angry when I wrote that. Not so much at you but rather at youtube itself for this half-baked \'feature\'. The best thing in the world would be to have the tutorial narrated with your actual voice. It does seem like it contains information very useful for Blender-noobs like myself.

I got tired of manually editing dae files for import to Blender, so I wrote a little Python script that should take care of most dae file problems.

Written and tested with Python 2.6.6, some knowledge of using python scripts would be helpful to the user :)

That sounds handy... Where can we find this script?

What I\'m *really* looking for is a nice simple tool or technique for importing an existing (e.g. stock) part, tweaking it\'s dimensions, (e.g. doubling or tripling the length of a fuel tank), and saving it back with minimum fuss. I can then tweak the CFG file to match. The goal is to reduce component count in my ships without deviating too far from the visual style and other characteristics of the stock parts. (I.e. the same ship *could* be built with stock parts and behave the same, but using one remodelled part to replace three stock ones improves the performance of the physics engine.)

Any suggestions? Is this a useful use-case for a demo video?

6mb is too large for a simple model by several magnitudes. My largest .dae is 899KB and that\'s 4.8k polys. Remember that all you need from blender is a part mesh with UV map and a simple node_collider, there is no need for animations, textures, shaders or anything else.

Hitting alt-F2 brings up the KSP console which allows you to see the error KSP gives you on load.

Does it finish loading (loading for along time) or never finish loading (stuck loading forever)? If it never finishes, you could post it here... but there is a 5mb limit. :P

My shuttle engine I\'m working on is 10k polys I think. It takes an ages to pass the first time, because the game checks it and loads it into the games files. But after that the game loads quick and smoothly. Anything over 3mb (about 20-30k polys?) is probably pushing a little too far right now.

If you can post the error or part we could help solve the problem. :)

Not sure what you have done there, but your file has no faces! :(

But no worries... Super Ben is here.

Now you can texture it. A simple cube could work for a node_collider. Perhaps with the top extended and shrunk down to give it a taper.

i think it was that the face edit mode was off :P

I am not sure what you did there. Try the download from my post again. It has the full model.

To make a node collider, just use a cube for now. Resize it in edit mode to fit the size of the tank. :)

it\'s an rcs tank, not a fuel tank, btw i took the faces from the cargobay and the cockpit because it functions like an adapter

No need for sarcasm, but i cannot pause quickly enough for some sentences. As you can see on the top left corner in the video, is a loading sign, wich doesen\'t help very much on using pause, actually is disrupting it !

I have to agree with Vlad. The video is so cramped with information, it is hard to grasp. The pause button doesn\'t provide much help with that. The video seems more like a reminder of all the functions to those who already know blender than help a complete novice learn some tricks of the trade. It happens often that i have to replay the video several times just to find where a particular button is located (and then i still have to find out which option of a following menu i have to choose).

The video is good, no doubt about it, but the pace is much to fast for a n00b.

But on the positive side: This evening i finally have learned something about Blender from this tutorial and several others (YAAY!).

One question though. Can you use a duplicate of the shape you\'ve made for the collision thingy?

I have, seems to work as normal.
