Operation "Save those saves"?

Just wondering but I am guessing crew implementation and planetoid resurfacing are going to be the main cause of save breaking. If this is the case then perhaps sending worthwhile hardware into orbit and bringing the crew back home might make it easier to translate saves over to 0.21? Probably not worth it for stuff on the moons of Kerbin but I have a save with some space planes landed on Laythe and mothballing them in orbit then bringing the pilots home in a transport (with a quick weekend party at the Mun memorial in remembrance naturally) might be a worthwhile mission.

Well i keep hoping that when the update goes live, we can copy our ("de-manned") ships in persistent.sfs and paste them into a newly generated save game... If not, I think its a final goodbye to my already-questionable sanity

I doubt it. If the saves brake, it's because the format of the save files will be different. If it was a simple as emptying the ship of all crew and pasting it in the new save files, we would already know it by now. If save files are made compatible, it will be through changing the code lines that changed with .21. Harvester is working on such a tool that will do this apparently.

Also wrote a system to attempt upgrading saves, which is currently being tested. No word yet on whether or not it’ll even be usable, and even then, it’s not going to be able to adapt every save, but we might be able to salvage a station or two.

This is from the latest KSP Weekly, HarvesteR's work for the past week. So not all is lost, we might be able to keep our space programs just yet.

The Mun is the only body getting a significant make over as far as I'm aware. So getting anything you have on the Mun back up into orbit would be your best bet for saving it. They might be making other changes to planets that haven't been talked about yet so getting everything on the other planets back up into orbit could enhance their chances as well.

just hyperedit everything up... and then hyperedit everything back down.

I play all stock... but I would use hyperedit to save my efforts in the face of a save breaking update if I had anything worth saving.

This is all assuming Harv gets a save ... saver... working. As for getting your kerbals back to kerbin... I don't think that would be necessary... but it can't hurt.

Having everything in orbit and only having to mess with the kerbal management part... would make everything simpler on you in the event you have to edit things by hand yourself.

There's no way he could know how to do this right now as there' no way he could know what the new save format will look like.

Scott Manley is the Chuck Norris of KSP. Of course he knows. It's the accent that gives him his power.

I would think that procedurally generated craters would apply to all planets with craters.

Thanks guys!

As for player-made craters, I'm afraid this system isn't very suitable for it, since to update the terrain we have to rebuild the entire quadtree, and that takes a while. It would be pretty lame if every time you crashed the game would halt for a couple of seconds to dig a little hole. Plus, the terrain resolution is far too low to do them like that.

I think a better solution there would be to do crater objects that we place, like bullet holes in shooting games. But that's another feature for another day. ;)

As for which planets, currently this mod is only applied on the Mun. It takes a significant amount of time to tune the parameters to look good on a celestial body, so I think for now the Mun will be the only body using this system.

In any case the Mun was the body in most desperate need of a revisit. But we'll definitely go over the other ones on later updates though.

Cheers

It was in the comments of the Procedural Craters blog. So All we know is that it is applied to the Mun. The other planets are a maybe... but probably have not had it applied.

The main thing I want to save from my save, are my favourite kerbals. I hope there's a way.

Just store the code of the Kerbals and save it in a text note. They're all at the beginning of your save file, just find them and copy/paste them :P Then when .21 comes by, find the place where the Kerbals are now stored, it might change a bit and the format of a Kerbal might change, but it shouldn't be something big, just modify the code in accordance and paste it there :)

Yeah, may need to do a little reverse engineering this time. Or I could wait until Crewmainfest updates and use its editor function to recreate them, after noting their courage/stupidity stats.
