KERBOL
I was wondering if the planets and moons are in a free orbit. Can you anchor lets say some 1,000,000 lb thrust engines to the launch pad, aim the rockets at an angle so the thrust goes up or at an angle and use this as a thruster to speed up or slow down the planets rotation? I made a rig with 3 X 1.000.000 lb thrusters but have no Idea how long I would have to leave them running to see any change in planets rotation speed. If that is even possible in this game. I know we would be pushing against the atmosphere, but maybe the game does not pick up on that in this case. Any Ideas?
stupid_chris
No you can't every planet is anchored in their orbit sadly.
allmappedout
No you can't every planet is anchored in their orbit sadly. You say sadly...but I bet all the Kerbals who don't go into space today are thankful!!
Pursuedtank
While The Planets may be on rails, think of how long it would take to get everything into the right place. Scott Manley did a video on the subject as well. You could move the planets with hyperedit if you really wanted to.

Tex_NL
Scott Manley explains why you would not be able even if the planets/moons where NOT on rails:
KerbMav
No you can't every planet is anchored in their orbit sadly.Every Kerbol planet at least!but we have neglected the spacecraft's effects on the planet. The linear momentum gained by the spaceship is equal in magnitude to that lost by the planet, though the planet's large mass makes the resulting change in its speed negligibly small. These effects on the planet are so slight (because planets are so much more massive than spacecraft) that they can be ignored in the calculation."Scientits predict: slingshotting probes around Jupiter will make him come down and crash into earth!"In maybe an aeon or two, but ...! KERBOL
What about just changing the rotation speed or direction. I got a rocket burning at 500,000,000 Pounds of thrust anchored to the launchpad on its side, let it run for half an hour then compared the times of the planet rotation and saw no difference. If you let it go long enough would it slow the rotation or even stop or reverse it? Or is that something locked into the game as well?
stupid_chris
Every characteristic of the planets are totally locked, you won't be able to change anything :l
KERBOL
So I guess I better forget about that 200,000,000,000,000,000 mas, 150,000,000,000,000,000 lbs thrust engine I was setting up on the launch pad to try to get florida up to where Main is. draeath
No, you can't recreate the Annihilatrix EDIT: OMG that would be an epic flag!EDIT2: Done! Edited July 19, 2013 by draeath better image

Dedjal
Hmm... Move the Mun to an 70'ish km orbit around Kerbin via hyperedit...Anyone tried something similar? If so, how is the SoI effected?
draeath
"Welcome to you're doom!" reallyYep. It was entirely intentional (you'd have to watch the show)

Depending on the direction they are launched but the small amounts of thrust add up over time to change our orbit quite a bit.

sal_vager
Guys, this would make a great Science Labs thread, please start a new one there, this thread is neither the right place and is far too old Closing.
