How many kerbals have you killed already?

I desperately tried to keep my Kerbals alive but I had my first death on a landing at Duna - I was trying to give a stranded Kerbal something to do and someone to play with by giving him a rover, and on the parachute assisted landing the rover shattered and the Kerbal in the rover plummeted to his death..

Every time something like that happens i feel sad, i've been scared of putting my kerbals in aeroplanes ever since i killed one when trying to land a plane on the runway, i make ejector cockpits for just about anything i fly now, rocket, plane or otherwise, that's the great thing about KSP, if you want to take your Kerbal's safety seriously you can.

I actually was quite sad as well! Especially as I had made a point on keeping my Kerbals alive, making an abort system etc. Whatever ship I next build is going to be named after him though ;)

Okay, seriously... do the prime trio actually come back? This is desperately important information.

Yes, all the time eventually. That is, in 0.20. Dunno about 0.21.

One. Then I got pissed that it was permadeath and stopped playing the game.

It's permadeath now?

All come back unless you change the difficulty setting in the save file. Then none will come back like I did.

To answer the question though I have killed a grand total of 4 Kerbals.

3 died (Bill, Gilming, and Decas)due to a botched rescue mission rolling down the mountains of Kerbin.

1 (Bildas) died from trying to land a plane on the 3 furthest out island. He almost made it too.

I stranded Jeb on the closest Island by accident.

Wait... difficulty?

3 so far. Jen ( Jeb* but..there should be female kerbals ) Bill and Bob. It was stupid though. After seperating the boosters I switched views to watch them fall back down ( wanted to make sure they fully destruct I'm playing with unlimited debris this time around ) but apparently the main ship despawns and kills all the kerbals if your not focused on it...dumb. is there a way to up the draw distance?

I lost one brave Kerbonaut in the process of testing an experimental super sonic Jet plane. I lost control over the plane due to high altitude flame out and was unable to regain control. It was moments before splahsdown that i realised that this plane, of ALL my designs, had no emergency Eject Systems installed.

To reminde me that failures like these will inevitably cost lives, i did not revert to space plane hangar. That was a sad day at KSC.

So far in 0.21 just the one, Bill ... ironically he was rescueing Jeb who had landed only 80km short after he ran out of fuel on the way home in an experimental aircraft.

The worst part was that the rescue plane he died in did have an eject system, and it saved Jeb, but Bills cockpit hit flying debris as the plane broke up. There is now a memorial flag identifying the debris field for future generations.

I lost Bill like this, while doing an apollo style Mun landing, Bill stayed in the CM while Bob and Jeb landed.. while they were landing the CM mysteriously simply vanished(despawned) along with Bill.

I smell a government coverup!

None, actually! I've started a new permadeath run. I came /very/ close to losing three Kerbals on a Mun mission, when the lander impacted at 70m/s, leaving only the capsule to tumble down the side of a crater! A rescue craft brought them back, where they were recovered by plane. They have since performed a Minmus mission, and left many a flag in their wake, telling their story.

So is it just not possible to split a ship into two separate parts like that? Mostly, I'm curious if you would have been able to do this if you had staged it differently or something.

It is possible as I did the exact thing today. Bob made 6 orbits around before Jeb and Bill took the lander back up to dock and come home. Must have been a physics glitch.
