Look Mum, no cockpit!

Recommended Posts

UPDATE: I've posted a new version of the craft with a few little fixes and tweaks, the most serious issue being that the probe core was mounted at a slight downward angle, whoops. There was also a stray solar panel that found it's way into the craft, this too is now gone.

With Summer finally here you'll want to feel the wind in your hair, the sun on your face and the fragrant smell of jet fuel in your nostrils. That's right what you need is a convertible and here at Cupcake Landers we're more then happy to oblige. Herbie seats two passengers or can be flown remotely, it's up to you. Thanks to the new SAS system Herbie is seriously maneuverable and can dance across the sky like a ballerina.

It floats quite nicely as well so can make a pretty good sea rescue craft.

Ejector seats and fuel tanker included as standard, the later of which will let you completely re-fuel Herbie over 4 times.

INSTRUCTIONS:

You can download the ship from here: http://goo.gl/oDolrF It needs to go into your SPH folder. (This is my first Dropbox upload so let me know if you have trouble...)

Herbie is controlled by a horizontally placed probe head mounted slightly towards the stern , if you prefer you can also fly it like a regular rocket by switching command over to the docking port.

Once you launch the vessel your two Kerbals will be sat in the fuel tanker, the first thing you'll want to do (assuming you want a manned mission) is put on the handbrake and transfer your Kerbals to the seats. You can do this by climbing up the ladder and walking along the gangway or dropping down and using the ladders on the ship.

After driving the fuel tanker out the way you'll be ready to launch, activate the ASAS (recommended) and press 1 to fire up the jet. You've also got four rockets to add a bit of spice to the proceedings, they can be toggled by pressing 2, and come in handy If the ground seems to be running towards you at an alarming rate or if you fancy a bit of a zoom. Pressing 3 will set you in landing mode by shutting down/activating 2 of the four rocket engines which will help get rid of the throttle lag from the main jet engine.

With the tanker I recommend you drive it off the runway and park it somewhere, you can then use it to re-fuel Herbie. You can also use it as a tow truck to haul the ship back to base. It's pretty heavily laden with fuel so needs to be driven with a light touch.

CONTROLS

1 - Toggle Jet

2 - Toggle Rocket Assist

3 - Toggle Landing Mode

5 - Toggle Docking Port Light (Fuel Tanker)

ABORT - De-couple

SPACE - Eject! Eject! Eject!

Enjoy!

Thanks guys, I've always wanted to make one of these but until we got the reaction wheels it wasn't really practical. Really liking the new ASAS system! (the 0.21.1 version, the first update was horrifying...) :D

Hey I saw your video in youtube a few hours ago (while looking for 0.21.1 videos), probably fresh out of the oven.

I have to say you are quite a good pilot, flying through these mountains in a vtol and landing it precisely.

Also that's a pretty good design, love how you can also refuel it with a tanker.

Cheers. You can't assign Kerbals to seats so I had to attach a Lander Can somehow, I thought I may as well make something useful with it. As for my piloting skills they're okay, but between us, flying a VTOL in KSP is 10 times easier then a helicopter, now that's where you sort the men from the boys! :)

Inb4 intake spam on the SSTO version.

Nah, just kidding i really like the look of everything you have there, the tanker, the craft and the look of the SSTO version. (very nice black)

I use the intakes as a structural element (that's my rather lame excuse)... Doesn't look quite as bad when you're just spamming the one engine though... :)

Now, take said SSTO, build a transfer and refueling device in orbit and take it to laythe!

Protip: replace all but the last circular intake in each row with a ram intake for a much more ''structural'' look, weighs the same and produces the same amount of air, and looks cooler

Funnily enough I've just finished a Laythe mission with my latest drop ship. :) It's called the Stratos and has roughly the same performance as the Corgi but with the added benefit of a cockpit. (I've had complaints about eyebrows being burnt off). Anyway, I'm just cutting together a little vacation video from the mission. (which features a long range mother-ship) I'll upload is as soon as it's ready. BTW you're right about the ram intakes but I just like to use them to add a bit of an artistic flourish, namely sticking them behind the cockpit so they look cool...

SSTO version!? Boy...

Bob: EJECT! EJECT!

Jeb: *poker face*

Bob: What? was it something I did?

Jeb: now we are stuck in orbit thanks to you...

Mewhehe, since this is not a SSTO I can easily fly it :P. I did train with your [insert name here] but I failed to get into orbit :(
