Which shrouds and protective covers do you use?

I'm ready to take the next step and have rockets that look like rockets. I've got enormous boosters with stupid looking landers with bits hanging off them and it all looks very kerbal but I'm after a new look.

I'd like to push my craft design so that it is neat, compact, minimises parts and weight and as in real life, fits inside a shroud. Which parts do you use for shrouds and do they come in different sizes?

If its 21 compatible then great. Otherwise I'll test with 20.2 to see if they work. Cheers.

None!!! Ha ha ha! Scorching parts in the atmosphere totally makes them work better.

Speaking slightly outside my own range of experience though, several mods provide parts that give you just the kind of enclosing fairings you want for your ship - probably the most recommended new mod for such a thing is the Procedural Fairings mod that automatically figures out just the right size of fairing your payload needs and creates it in the VAB, no matter what shape it is. The two things I don't know about it are 1. whether it actually works in .21, and 2. the spaceport/forum link for the mod because I didn't look it up while I was writing. Sorry.

EDIT: someone posted the PF link just above, thanks.

Sometimes ProceduralFairings interstages can be too big (should be fixed in 2.1 with low-profile bases), hence why I use a combination of KW interstages/decouplers, NP adapters/decouplers and I use PFairings for adapter interstages if the size is reasonable.

For modded fairings, Procedural Fairings all the way. That mod is completely simple to use and looks fantastic with your payload no matter what.

the problem with procedural fairings is all the base plates are downsizing adapters as well. which means your payload should use smaller size diameter parts (2.5m > 1.25m, etc.). having payloads with the same size diameter parts as the lifter below it looks strange

this one is fantastic indeed, but if for some reason you don't feel like using it, a very nice and also .21 compatible method is nathan's faring factory. I absolutely love that one, especialy since you can also do really crazy stuff with it!

Used it today.

A really silly procedural fairings pic:

Launching a Kraken egg.

Reminds me of the Cuttlefish lander for the old Bigtrak Rover.

And yeah, keep in mind that with the current drag model every extra part adds more drag as well as weight (actually the amount of drag it adds is based on the weight of the part modified by its 'drag' stat). Nosecones and fairings look good, but they reduce your rocket's capability. Unless you use FAR, then they do help, so long as it recognizes them correctly (I think rpayne was saying it doesn't for Novapunch's fairings?)
