Great idea, I'm wondering how high impact this is compared to stock skybox?

There is no performance impact with the shipped skybox, unless you use a higher resolution one.

I did a mod spotlight, though I must say the record quality just couldn't give it justice (even after I re-recorded with higher settings).

<video>

Thanks for the spotlight, I might add that 2048p is the default resolution of the original skybox, but you can do any resolution, so theoretically 4096p or even 8192p and anything in between.

Very cool. I always disliked that cartoon background.

Is this a step to replacing or adding other textures.... ie modifying planets?

I haven't looked into this but it was on my mind. Theoretically yes, considering I don't think they used code generated textures. If I do decide to expand this mod beyond the skybox, I will restructure it to replace any texture wanted - but I need to do more research on that.

Just a heads up: when I try to download this mod, Dropbox throws me an error.

EDIT: Stopped erroring. It was apparently a VERY temporary problem.

I just updated the download and added a reference folder with a dummy skybox for skybox creators.

Edit: Also just updated to version 1.1. Change log added to the first post.

Let me re-reply to your comment with these 2 little pictures :).

Great mod! The free, open source tool Spacescape would probably go great with this.

Very nice find and an excellent suggestion! I'm sure we'll see an explosion of custom starfields now.

I decided to modify the original skybox that came with the mod because it looked too bright and crowded.

Changes:

-Higher contrast - means stars are brighter and the rest is darker which gives an illusion of higher resolution.

-Reduced number of visible stars

-Removed most of the Milky Way

-Removed a couple of stars that seemed too big

-Re-colored (blue, orange and white stars)

I also made a Black and White version, if you don't like colored stars.

need moar stars

There are a bit more actually, but they are tiny thus you can't see them cause of the pics' relatively low resolution.

EDIT: I added a different b&w screenshot where you can see.

The sky is positively crowded with stars. The lights from most human settlements make the majority of stars completely invisible, but from space the sky should look crowded.
