should i pursue undoing my transfer

  1. 1. should i pursue undoing my transfer

Recommended Posts

DISCLAIMER!!! i am not meaning to discredit squad in any way. my goal here it to explain my problem and see what other peoples opinions are on how i might resolve this issue either by myself or with squad.

i while back, i transferred my account to steam, mostly for the auto updater (more than once i had forgot to back up my saves after an update, losing them.) and the trading cards. (which i made enough money on to finish my savings for a new game.) however, i encountered a bug that would not let me load up a save, freezing the game and my 8 GB RAM mac in the process. with the help of squad bug support, we isolated the problem to steam, as when i ran it isolated from steam, or without steam running, it worked perfectly. (was my first game time in ksp in the two weeks of figuring this out.) so i then asked if i could undo my transfer to steam, as, at least when i transferred, it said that if i had a problem due to the transfer it could and would be undone. (i can not find this anymore, so they may have removed it, but i clearly read it when i transferred. this was the reason i decided to take the risk in the first place.) however they emailed back saying that they could not do this. i am at a loss, as although i can still play this game, it requires a good bit of file delving and program managing to do, and gets very annoying on a busy day when my computer is getting shut down when i go for a wile and then getting turned on again and i have to file dive all over again just to get the game running. this would not be as much of an issue if the subject on the bug tracker says it is not even being worked on! so what do you guys think i should do? should i pursue the matter with squad? is there a known workaround that wont require 5 minutes of file searching to start the game?

again, because i know some people will mis the first one,

this is NOT a rant on how bad squad support is or on the company in general. i do not mean to hate in any way, sorry if it comes out that way.

EDIT: thanks everyone for you suggestion, and i will definitely use it, but it still irks me. i will be starting a poll as to wether you think it would be worth it to pursue this matter with squad anymore. this may end up being a petition also, so help will be greatly appreciated if i decide to pursue the re transfer back to the ksp store.

You can just launch the game from the directory it's stored in, without going through Steam.

This. I run my Steam copy from a shortcut on the desktop that points directly to the game exe. Steam never runs its overlay and whatnot.

ok, but any idea if this will be fixed?

It seems you already have your answer. Your workaround has been noted: create a shortcut directly to the exe file.

If SQUAD ever decide to implement some sort of launch scheme that requires Steam, that would be when they should consider fixing it.

E: As for "file diving", you can literally copy the entire "Kerbal Space Program" folder from the Steam folder to somewhere else, and play from that directory.

Define "fixed". Allowing you to undo the transfer? Probably not ever. They did warn you.

Find the program in your steam directory, make a shortcut to it, and put it on your desktop. If you must, I believe you can also simply copy the contents of that directory to another, more conveniently placed one.

i mean so it dosent freeze when loading a save file. as i said, i was under the impression that if i had problems with the steam transfer, they would undo it. but anyway, thanks everyone for the help.

and the trading cards. (which i made enough money on to finish my savings for a new game.)

Would you be willing to pay back that money to revert away from steam?

as when i ran it isolated from steam, or without steam running, it worked perfectly.

So nothing prevents you from playing the game.

i am at a loss, as although i can still play this game, it requires a good bit of file delving and program managing to do, and gets very annoying on a busy day when my computer is getting shut down when i go for a wile and then getting turned on again and i have to file dive all over again just to get the game running.

This is not down to the game, nor Squad, or even Steam. I'm sure even Macs have shortcuts. Correct me if I'm wrong.

this would not be as much of an issue if the subject on the bug tracker says it is not even being worked on!

You're able to play the game. If the issue is solved or not, or when, really doesn't alter if you can play the game or not.

so what do you guys think i should do?

Learn to make shortcuts on your Mac. I've never used one myself, but if you give a bit more information than "it's a white box with an apple logo" I'm sure I could google up a how-to instruction.

should i pursue the matter with squad?

What's there to pursue? You're able to play the game. The only thing that seems to be the problem is that you're unwilling or unknowing on how to make a shortcut to the executable.

is there a known workaround that wont require 5 minutes of file searching to start the game?

Right, since I've never used a 'Mac', explain to me what's taking you five minutes and what's preventing you from creating a shortcut or whatever route to the game folder in question.

And I apologize in advance if I come off as harsh, but all I can understand from your post is that through your own personal inability to work your computer you're holding Squad/Steam responsible and wanting them to put in extra work/effort to make things easier for you. On an issue that is a non-issue since you can currently play the game no less.

Are you running Steam and KSP at the same time? If you don't have a decently powerful computer it may be a lack of memory.

Here's recommended specs:

* 2.0Ghz Dual Core CPU or higher (preferably higher)

* 4GB RAM

* 512MB Video Card, Shader Model 3.0

* 1GB Free HD space

* Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8

* An Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 or higher

* A Debian based Linux distro

To make a shortcut on OS X, just right click on the KSP icon and choose "Make Alias" and drag the newly created file to your desktop. You can also drag the KSP icon to the dock at the bottom of the screen (by default, anyway) and that will serve the same purpose.

as i said, i can a nd will make a shortcut, its just that i kinda irks me that they are unable to undo the transfer.

Would you, or would you not, be willing to repay the money you gained by your steam transfer?

There wouldn't be any actual benefit to undoing your transfer of the game to Steam. At the very least, using Steam lets you download the client and any updates faster than you would otherwise...and it doesn't cost SQUAD nearly as much for bandwidth when people download the game through Steam. So you're helping yourself by using a better download medium and you're helping SQUAD pinch a few pennies on bandwith 'cause you used Steam instead of their own hosting service.

They're also not going to require you to run the game through steam...ever. I mean, it's a possibility that they could do that but like...they removed Steam as a DRM for the Steam version of the game, so it literally just runs as everyone's said...out of the folder without Steam knowing or caring if you've got Steam open or not. Would be odd for them to take such a stance and manually remove Steam as a DRM for their game only to re-add it later on. It'd make a bunch of people angry...though not many people compared to those that don't care about Steam DRM >.>

Either way, just copy your folder to somewhere more convenient as people have been telling you...or make a shortcut or whatever and you'll be fine. The .22 update should see the game ported over to the new Unity engine, which I hear has some Mac/Linux improvements. I don't know any specifics, but it might help you out a bit with running the game through Steam.

Surprised this hasn't come up before, but the way I recall it, the option to undo a Steam transfer in case of problems was specifically for problems with the TRANSFER. They gave an example (which actually happened to some people as I recall) where the transfer basically only partially went off, leaving you in a state where you couldn't get KSP from either the store or from Steam, but also couldn't redo the transfer either.

Another flawed poll. No option for "I couldn't possibly care less."

All polls are flawed. It's impossible to think of every possible response.

Some are more flawed than others, sometimes deliberately, as the options or questions are asked leadingly. I annoyed the heck out of one 'survey' taker during the 2008 election when I stuck by my answer even after he A.) Asked the question in a ridiculously leading way. B.) Asked AGAIN after trying to emphasize his point in an equally biased, leading way.

I'm honestly not sure it actually WAS a survey and not just trying to get a particular message out about something while disguising it as a survey.

If it were me, I'd simply buy the game again, and trash the steam copy, as the amount of play I've gotten already far exceeds what I have paid. But then I am working, and the cost is pocket change to me.

Having said that, this sounds like it is actually a steam problem, and you should be talking to their tech support to resolve the issue. Squad is not responsible for the extra stuff Steam adds to make KSP a Steam game.

yes, i suspect it is a steam problem, but steam offers no support for third party games and does not offer refunds for early access.

The game runs perfectly when isolated from Steam so...er...run it isolated from Steam.

You transferred the game to Steam for the benefit of the auto-updater, a feature which does not require you to actually be playing the game at the time. Once it's updated, the file location is always the same and you can just run KSP from KSP.exe instead of the Steam-based icon with run_steamid:<number> as the pathname.

I don't really understand why you're asking for an opinion or a fix when the latter is staring right back at you.
