STOL/VTOL Challenge

To hell with that island! It\'s actually a part of underwater cliff visible in this picture:

I\'ve landed there -- but have slept into the water:

Then I\'ve tried to get on the ground again and --

Consider this as a proof I have had standard C7 gear :)

Also notice the slope. Best of luck to next pilots in standing still on such a hillside))

Well, I had a partial success. I reached the island, but not without the command module snapping off my STOL. Maybe with another try I could land, despite the incredibly small size of the island. In the end, I learnt a lot about landing, so it was all worthwhile.

I\'m just wondering, how does your STOL work? I cannot work it out from the picture. My own works quite simply; drop down to you are a few meters off the ground, but heading horizontally. Then all that is needed is to fire the RCS and brake until it drops onto the floor. If you get the first part done properly, it\'s very reliable.

I do the same :). One of RCS landing ports is visible near the nose gear in the last picture I\'ve posted.

The VA Goshawk. S/VTOL. Although it uses SRBs as a first stage, the spaceplane itself is fully built from C7 parts, and can reach the island with fuel to spare.

This craft got me the closest yet. However, it suffered an RCS malfunction, unrelated to fuel, just before landing. The retros failed to fire, and it crashed.

I think that plane might be disqualified for having two stages..

It\'s a plane, not a shuttle-type vehichle.

It doesn\'t actually need the SRBs. They just make orbital entry that much faster.

But anyhoo, I landed by the island and powered myself up and onto it. The screenshot shows only one landing gear on the ground, but it did have all three.
