What happened 2013 April?

The server the forum was hosted on was compromised, and they were only able to restore the backups from before octoberish 2012. That's one of the reasons you also see so many users with accounts created in April this year.

We all woke up on an early April morning. We logged onto the fourms, but all we would see was horror. The fourms were down not just down but gone. Hours dragged onto become days. Seven days later the fourms opened up. Hundreds of accounts had been viciously murdered, hundreds more had their post count severely dropped. The entire form had been rolled back to October. During that time I was only a lurker. Posts, fanart, and fourm games all destroyed in those seven days. Today we mourn the loss of those lost in the accident, but we move on build up our post count, repost those post. We shall never be defeated.

Well, It turns out Squad was experimenting with virtual reality, and plugged in the headset wrong when having KSP loaded. This resulted in Jeb and his rocket spawning in real life, which Jeb was flying and crashed into the servers. This is often regarded as speculation.

My birthday happened.

Just joking, accounts were deleted, KSP forums were down, etc.

Probably some problems with the servers, I don't really remember the cause.

My account was deleted too, but I made it like three days before the happening, and I didn't even post at the time, just lurked, so no problem.

I was quite happy to find my account survive the mysterious forum armageddon. I actually only found out about a day or two into the blackout about it, but i was nonetheless spared the worst, besides not knowing if or when the forums would return.

Went a little all out with my sig though... I could probably get around to changing it or adding something else to it just to spice it up.

April 2013 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the Kerbal Space Program Forum was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the Great Space Kraken of the Moon of Jool, Bop

The Kerbal Space Program Forum was at peace with that species and, at the solicitation of The Kraken, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in Space.

Indeed, one hour after The Kraken had commenced bombing in the Server Room, the Bop ambassador to the Kerbal Space Program forums and his colleague delivered to our Community Manager a formal reply to a recent KSP Forum message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

The Kraken had, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout Space. The facts of April 2013 speak for themselves. The people of the KSP Forums had already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our Forums.

As commander in chief of the IT Guys, Harvester had directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole Forum remember the character of the onslaught against us.

Yes, it was awful. Many good kerbonauts and their memories were lost those seven days...

Also, thanks for using my signature :sticktongue:

Wow.. months of lost posts and hundreds of accounts? Compromised forum?

Blah blah blah security policy. Hourly backups blah blah. Blah blah disaster recovery plan. Blah blah 1996? Blaaaaahh Squad.

I wasn't there when it happened.... No, I hadn't even bought KSP. I'm still not sure exactly what happened. Where was the DDoS launched from? No one knows, certainly not me. I wasn't around for the other tragedies either. What was Postcards From Laythe? Who were those influential users banned? But I did see the most recent tragedy. The destruction of a thread. What is this I don't even.

And that scar will never go away.

Yeah. Figures. One time, I visited their forums. I had to be rushed to the OR for an emergency faith in humanity transplant.

Are these guys for realsies? I mean... it could be a troll community. When I'm bored I like to say I'm a recruiter of the "Realist church" in Atheist forums and an anti-DiHydrogen MonOxide activist.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
