.22 and landing legs; what we know

So, I just got done with Harv's .22 youtube vid and learned a lot.

If you want to watch it, here it is:

Landing legs get a major rework in .22 so here is what we know according to Harv.

1) We get a new set of them. Cool

2) They can now get broken AND repaired by kerbals. My minmus boys will be thrilled.

3) They now have piston hydraulic suspension. Awesome!

4) Their feet are now pivoted and auto-orienting towards ground. Great!!!

So, what are peoples new plans for crazy landers and bases?

My prediction is that within 30m of .22 going live, somebody will post a youtube video of an exploit of the new legs (surely involving struts and boosters) that will allow you to put Jeb in Kerbol orbit straight from the launching pad by doing something bizar with the new landing gear.

Seeing as they've got Danny2462 as a tester, I'm sure he's already done that 16 times.

My spidey senses are warning me about some interesting new reddit challenges coming up . . .

I presume these new legs will automatically replace all of the medium landing legs on my existing ships? That could give some odd results.

Agreed. It will be interesting. But the old ones were dodgy..

And I won't miss them. I'll shake my fist at them and say to them that's what happens when you stuff up my landings.

I hate those old medium legs; I never use them anymore. I've had small probes flip completely over while doing absolutely nothing because of those things.

not a new set, they modify the look of the medium landing legs.

the pistan can get stuck in case of major inpact with them, blocking the piston to a certain position (like retracted or fully extended etc...)

EVA repair with the kerbal just like the wheels

3) They now have piston hydraulic suspension. Awesome!

This is so they can absorb more shock during the landing, you don't have to land a 0.1m/s now, 5/7m/s should be ok with the medium

4) Their feet are now pivoted and auto-orienting towards ground. Great!!!

I guess that's for the look. :)

I think with the new landing legs, a lot of people are going to destroy their engine by landing too hard. You're still going to have to land softly (unless you place the legs low enough to avoid the engine hitting the ground when you land).

I am really looking forward to it, especially if this aids in landing on a slope (at least to a limited degree). I also like the destructibility mechanism. Much more realistic.

Lastly, I just hope that the medium legs work better now. I never use them because, as Tw1 posted, they get wonky on me. 4 out of 5 times my landers gyrate apart with them, especially if the ground isn't perfectly flat, so I never use them, even though they are great for small landers.

I'm not sure how the repair function is going to work. If a leg breaks, your craft falls over. If you repair the leg is the craft going to magically right itself?

The impression I get is the repair only acts on the suspension system. If your landing leg falls off you can't do anything with it.

Reaction wheels are there for that. Don't be a reaction wheel miser... put 'em everywhere!

I had an Eve lander who was walking downhill :)

I had to blow the legs to stop it,

the first version using the small legs worked better, they all broke during landing and put me softly down on the engines.
