[Airships in 1.12.3] HooliganLabs Mods

I'm using single docking ports on 4 sides (It's octagonal). Since the COM is very low for stability reasons, the airship part is detachable. The reason for this is that it bring the temporrary (airship-mdoe) COM up to the level of the docking ports. There, I have a detachable docked engine module and counterweight. My plan is to fly it out to the location using those modules, brake it midair, drop the engine and counterweight, land gently, quickly turn airship buoyancy up and release them, so that the float off. Pictures coming soon...

I understand. I will try to search for it. Anyways, will you highlight the piece of code when you find it? Or maybe in a future update you might remove the limit?

I am currently needing to learn C# so that I can start working on the code base

Ok so here is the thing. Love this mod but it REALLY needs an update to the parts and textures so that they are more usable. To that end I am beginning work on a full model and texture replacement for the Airships.

What I need from you (The users) is to know what types and sizes of parts you would like to see come into the mod. Note that just because you suggest I add one in the shape of a fifty foot tall bikini clad woman does NOT mean I will! Funny though it would be. I also need to know of any parts you would like to see saved from the junkyard.

Also if anybody can help me with doing textures I would be in your debt.

Parts to be saved:

Dodec

OMG Airship (Will become the new largest size)

So a giant "parade balloon"-style floating kerbal would be out of the question?

My request then:

- Standard zeppelin shape, but broken down into equal-sized (by volume) nose, mid, and aft sections.

- Nose should align when rotated so if we decide to put a symbol on the front, we can get it straight regardless of bilateral duplication.

- We can make the balloon longer by just adding more mid-sections.

- Aft section should be able to support elevators and ailerons (biggish B9 style or other), possibly a small flat area for 1.25m jet part (rear facing) or mounting an FS prop.

- Nodes on the side/top/bottom to more easily hook into/balance things.

- Texture replacement support built in a-la FSBomber NoseArt example. This would be for the side-wall of the mid-section and nose of the front section.

- (optional) Semi- or mostly transparent material. This might save you some texturing work as well.

A side project with an inflatable dome that would cover an existing base would be cool :)

I am NOT making a balloon of Jeb in a leopard skin bikini!!! @.@

Now on to your requests:

1. Should be doable though it may take some work to split it even.

2. Not sure what you mean by that one.

3. That is the idea.

4. Also already planned. Will have small static pylons for mounting engines/fins however the user will have to balance them out.

5. I was looking at doing that just for ease of building with the airship at the root of the ship.

6. Why?

7. I can't texture to save my life.

2 + 6 both address the current awkwardness where the symbols carved into your zep sit at odd/not symmetrical angles.

2 means that the design is squarely aligned (not necessarily square at all) so that if you rotate the lead section CW or CCW, it will still nicely match the remaining sections. Why would you rotate? So your weird squid or whatever the user chooses (see 6) stays upright and gnarly-looking.

6 is so the user can simply toss in his own symbol textures in separate files and the FS texture switcher can display whatever the user wants on his nosecone or side.

The new save behaviour coming in ARM is massive for airships and floating bases.

I'm wondering if we'll be able to switch craft without placing a land anchor?

That is not my code stopping that. That is a limit from Squad in stock KSP that keeps you from switching without landing.

I know. I recall Hooligan going to great lengths to try to get airships to save in atmosphere. Nearly managed it too. I suggested using anchors made using KAS as a workaround - it worked, provided velocity was 0.

According to the ARM previews, you can hit quicksave with a moving rocket at full throttle metres above the launchpad. This bodes well for airships, but we'll need to test it out on release. Here's hoping!

I've been using squided wheels for some time now and decides to share it with others:

I've talked with Hooligan Labs and he OKed me to share this but he is a bit baffled at how I got it to work, I honestly don't know how it works I just copied and pasted the squid .cfg text around, that it. Here some photo proof. The only bug I've noticed is if I pause the game with the squids on, when I unpause the wheels usually pop/explode. I painted the wheels blue so as not to confuse them with normal wheels, I made them weigh a bit more to be fair as well. It also works with the smaller model 2 wheels.

Interesting though it would make sense how it could work if you keep the SQUID power settings low enough.

Look closely, those wheels are charged to 100. I can bring it to 200 before the wheels pop. I guess you mean the model 2 wheels, yes those are generally overpowered so you only need one pair out of 3 or 4 charged to 10 to hold the rover down.

The best way to make a proper (or at least aerodynamic looking) zeppelin with this would be to make stretchy tanks work with this then add some control car parts.

I am not going to make this mod dependant on another mod to work. So making it stretchy tanks is right out.

Very interesting. Not sure WHY that is the way it is but if it works then kudos. I will add them to the SQUID mod today.
