[WIP] [Part] Kerbal Shipping Container

Looking for some feedback on my first attempt at creating a part. I tend to like the sillier parts of Kerbal "engineering" so I figured a large shipping container would be a fun thing to create. To a Kerbal, this is a high capacity transport module, or a Mun base, or maybe(with something like KAS) a bulk intergalactic part storage.

Its still a very rough WIP although the modeling is just about finished. I'd like to add a few more details to the doors and then animate them. It needs to be UV unwrapped and then have a texture with the typical container labeling and some weathering applied.

I'm aware its probably not the most useful or pretty part, but I wanted something fairly simple for a first part so hopefully people like it. I'll probably export it to Unity later this week and then work on getting it into KSP so I can post a file for playtesting. Let me know what you think!

The textures and model look very well done; you should give yourself more credit. Neat idea, I envision resupplying my base by sky-crane with an under-slung container. The KAS integration idea sounds like it would fit nicely.

You should make an adapter/decoupler for them to fit onto a rocket, and a version that not only stores parts, but fuel ones as well! Maybe even if your up for it a couple more optional textures past that...so those of use using kethane and EPLP can make more!!!

I would so love my planetary bases and industrial facilitys to be JUST these,,,so kerbal =)

Also I would have to agree with 15nelsoc, the model is near perfect and the texturing looks rather nice(much better than I can do lol), really lookin forward to dropping these at my bases.... hope not on any kerbal...

Glad to see there is interest in this! I envisioned this mostly being dropped by sky crane onto a planet surface so I didn't intend to make any adapters for it, but modeling some decouplers/adapters should be easy enough. The dimensions are 2.5x2.5x6.5m so it should fit nicely onto an orange tank. I'm not familiar with Unity at all so that may be a stumbling point, but hopefully I'll have something useable by the weekend.

If I recall, Someone else made shipping containers.. They were named Kerbco

There was indeed, I was (planning) to use them for highly modular cargo tugs. That was back in 1.8(?) though, and as far as I know they haven't been updated since. Weren't quite as pretty either.

Anyway, could be neat! Fino, do you intend these to be sort of like fuel tanks that look like they have doors, or are you making them as full on containers, hollow inside and all that?

Looking good!

This one is hollow with a floor but it would be easy enough to "weld" the doors closed and throw another texture on it.

Variety is good to have: solid, hollow, with or without doors, fuel-filled, separate parts for each side and the doors. You could make them compatible with KerbPaint for different colours too.

The older shipping container mod has long since disappeared, but you can see it in a video

. Yours is much higher quality. What is the poly count like?

you could add animation to the doors that way you could put stuff inside. Also would make a good first animation test if you have never done one.

As far as the model and texture goes I know your still working on it but, I would add more shading from lighting, an ambient occlusion pass does wonders. Dark spots in the crevices. Also I would fill it out with stickers and logos and such. Also add some more detail like holes and mounting points. I would add more detail to the top so its not perfectly flat.

Hollow containers with animated doors are a good catch all, if you're already making them. They work fine for fuel hauling and such too, since you can just stick tanks inside of them.
