What are Rockomax 48-7S good for? (Picture)

Recommended Posts

Answer: EVERYTHING.

Seriously tho, while it's ISP isn't as good as the LVN, it's amazing thrust to weight ratio combined with it being very light, weighting only 0.1 tons, it's advantage over the LVN is that you get much better mass fraction on lighter crafts. It's the go to engine for probes and one man landers, and even the final stage of 3 man rocket.

Also, using this engine you can create an Eve ascent craft that only weights about 10 tons.

I use that engine on a lot of my lander designs and combine it with a few 24-77's on a FL-T800 fuel tank. If you have four of these on a lander, you have enough thrust for a launch off the ground on kerban, so it's more than enough for other planets and moons. The lander that I put down on Moho had these engines and it was enough for a landing and a return to dock with the orbiting ship.

It's almost always the best thing for Probes, and for small landers it's good.

Best use I had for them was I'd put an oscarB, torus and an 48-7S on the bottom of my teeny rovers and that would place them down on the Mun just nicely.

They have the highest TWR of any engine in the game, and better Isp than the second-best mainsail. You need to be needing a lot of delta-V and have a very low thrust requirement before any other rocket engine becomes more efficient.

Even in 0.21 when they had a lot less thrust, they were often the best engine for the job.

I didn't realize they changed in .22. I never even tried them before as I'd always opt for the 909's. After reading this thread though, I'm going to have to try them out.

350 isn't what I would consider "very high" given that the Tier 0 liquid engine (the LV-T30) has better Isp. What's high is its 30 TWR. By comparison the mainsail has TWR 25, the T30 is at 17, the LV-909 is a mere 10, and the LV-N is a miserable 2.7

The radial version has much lower Isp and thrust and almost the same mass. They used to have a niche use, but a 48-7S on a cube strut is now far better.

In many cases you will get more Delta V with them than a LV-909. Especially since they have been buffed to 30KN, they are more viable that ever.

I never even noticed that. I was actually expecting an ISP nerf instead of a thrust buff. pretty sure I wasn't the only person who thought that it was already overpowered in 0.21

Whilist making a delivery vehicle for a rover, I noticed that you can make SSTOs out of them for ultra-lightweight orbital experiments:

Was redoing one of my rover delivery systems and using effectively 4 of this SSTO as the delivery vehicle.

I would be very interested in seeing this...

eveAssentCraft.png

It has rover wheels so it can drive it's way up to the 7.5 km peak and take of from there.

This was made before the 50% thrust buff to, so now it could be done with less engines, and thus it can be even lighter.
