None of those I'm afraid. This event still happened during one of the World Wars.

Maybe that refers to flashes, and the 'shots' are photographs. But we've been told it's not a celebration so that counts out a lot of the obvious guesses. And if it's in the Americas that rules out most of combat-related events of either World War, otherwise I'd think something to do with aerial photography.
