So mad at Google

Apparently, I need a cell phone to verify my account.

I don't have a working cellphone..I have a iPhone, yes, but somethigns bad with it and I'm not going to bother fixing it, because I don't need to.

And why do I need to get into my account?

I just purchased a $99.99 piece of software, and my verification key is in my account inbox!

[sOFT KITTENS] Google.

Borrow someone's phone, then ditch Google and go to Live Mail, or whatever the Borg are calling it this week?

Can't believe I'm suggesting to use Microsoft, but after the Google+ fiasco with Youtube, I'm thinking that anything is better than potentially ending up needing a Google Facebook account to do anything.

Normally you shouldn´t need one ...

they remind you of entering a phone number, but you can skip this step without entering one

Generally, when it happens, it's because something's triggered that looks like possibly suspicious behavior on the account. Perhaps the user is suddenly logging in at an IP that registers as being a significant geographic distance from typical login locations. Perhaps, through trickery, malware, or because the user was using the same password on other, less secure sites, someone /did/ get into the user's account and began using it for nefarious purposes. Perhaps the user is attempting to log in from a location where such things happen more frequently.

There's a balance between security and convenience that winds up getting struck, and it's always extremely annoying when you wind up on the wrong side of that balance.

This is exactly right. Some unknown entity tried logging into my gmails from china at one stage, so I added a 2-layer protection system to my personal emails now. I use my password and then a random number generator app on my android phone.
