Overview:

This is a project to create a series of mission packages for the Mission Controller Extended (MC) mod in conjunction with Kerbal Space Program (KSP). The goal is to provide a pathway for new players to learn the game – picking themselves up by their bootstraps – similar to how real life space programs developed. Much of the inspiration for this project came from the NASA and Soviet programs, condensing things where I felt necessary and providing a clean flow.

Also be aware that the mission goals are written with a procedural-heavy focus, calling out and requiring each individual step to be met for success. It will not be uncommon to come across missions with 10+ goals. Just a heads up in case that’s not your thing.

Scope:

The current scope is limited to programs within Kerbal’s sphere of influence (BSP-Kerbal SOI.mpkg), interplanetary programs (BSP-Interplanetary.mpkg), planetary/lunar orbital stations (BSP-Planet Orbitals.mpkg & BSP-Lunar Orbitals.mpkg), and planetary/lunar surface bases (BSP-Planet Bases.mpkg & BSP-Lunar Bases.mpkg). While the initial two mission packages – Kerbin SOI and Interplanetary – focus on incremental progression for fledgling space programs, the Orbitals and Bases mission packages highlight end-goal delivery with much less procedure.

Including a high level overview of the programs within each package below.

Kerbal SOI, 34 missions

-Kerra, 4 missions (Basic launching, orbiting and landing)

-Katurn, 7 missions (Orbiting, EVA, rendezvous and docking)

-Kastor, 4 missions (Unmanned Mun orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kollux, 4 missions (Unmanned Minmus orbiting, landing and returning)

-Keres, 8 missions (Manned Mun orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kiana, 7 missions (Manned Minmus orbiting, landing and returning)

Interplanetary, 34 missions

-Kars, 6 missions (Unmanned and manned Duna orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kenus, 6 missions (Unmanned and manned Eve orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kuno, 4 missions (Unmanned and manned Jool orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kesta, 6 missions (Unmanned and manned Dres orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kulcan, 6 missions (Unmanned and manned Moho orbiting, landing and returning)

-Kluto, 6 missions (Unmanned and manned Eeloo orbiting, landing and returning)

Planet Orbitals, 24 missions

-Fuel & Crew Support, 3 missions (Location indifferent, repeatable)

-Orbital Command Module, 7 missions (All planets)

-Orbital Core Modules, 7 missions (All planets, repeatable)

-Orbital Auxiliary Modules, 7 missions (All planets, repeatable)

Planet Bases, 24 missions

-Fuel & Crew Support, 3 missions (Location indifferent, repeatable)

-Surface Command Module, 7 missions (All planets)

-Surface Core Modules, 7 missions (All planets, repeatable)

-Surface Auxiliary Modules, 7 missions (All planets, repeatable)

Lunar Orbitals, 30 missions

-Fuel & Crew Support, 3 missions (Location indifferent, repeatable)

-Orbital Command Module, 9 missions (All moons)

-Orbital Core Modules, 9 missions (All moons, repeatable)

-Orbital Auxiliary Modules, 9 missions (All moons, repeatable)

Lunar Bases, 30 missions

-Fuel & Crew Support, 3 missions (Location indifferent, repeatable)

-Surface Command Module, 9 missions (All moons)

-Surface Core Modules, 9 missions (All moons, repeatable)

-Surface Auxiliary Modules, 9 missions (All moons, repeatable)

Grand Total, 176 missions

Installation/Usage:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of the Mission Controller Extended mod installed: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/43645-(KSP-22)-Mission-Controller-Extended-(Updated-Nov-6)-(BETA-36)

2. Copy all .mpkg files within the downloaded MC_Bootstraps_Package directory into your GameData\MissionController\Plugins\PluginData\MissionController directory.

3. Launch the game.

4. Open the Mission Controller plugin once you’re at the Space Center.

5. Select one of the “BSP†packages.

6. Select a mission.

7. Enjoy!

8. Feel free to report any issues or submit enhancement requests via GitHub: https://github.com/ihavealamp/MC_Bootstraps_Package/issues/new

Future Mission Packages:

Looking forward down the line, here are the prospective additions I have down so far.

-Interlunatary (same scope as the Interplanetary package, but for all non-Kerbin moons)

-K-Plane (based on historical X-Plane program)

-Reusable Launch Platform (based on historical shuttle program)

-Mining Operations (leverage Kethane mod for both mining and refueling operations)

-Survival Mode (require Deadly Re-Entry and IonCross mods, disallow MechJeb mod)

-Challenges (large collection from Reddit, YouTube, forums, etc.)

-Achievements (major goal accomplishments)

Roadmap/Schedule:

Short-Term Focus

-Test basic functionality for all missions

-Fix reported issues

Mid-Term Focus

-Gather feedback on mission rewards and fine-tune

Long-Term Focus

-Build additional mission packages

Sweet mother of kerbals, someone's been busy!

The creators of the mod have done a great job making package creation an easy piece of work. Most of the effort is in trying to figure out how you want it to progress.

I look forward to trying these out.

edit:

Hmm. Most of these are simple copy/paste affairs with different targets. Not too inspiring and only money rewards.

The Interplanetary, Orbitals and Station packs definitely have recycled mission types - commonalities any space programs would do for each planet (although the Kerbin SOI package is almost entirely unique). Probes, trial and error science (the Kerbal way!), landings, space stations and eventually surface bases. Can those get a bit repetitive for experienced players who have it all under their belt? Possibly, although it does provide a level of "mark off the achievements" as you move through them.

To be honest, the real target audience is for newer players - like myself - who were left wanting with the current state of the game not giving much in the way of direction or incremental goals. I think this helps fit the bill in the meantime, although you're completely right here - it's not for everyone!

As for the money rewards only, it's very easy to gain science points in the game right now - and players working through these missions will be able to gain science aplenty as they go. Certainly something to think about along the lines of another mission package, though!

Put it after "reward = #" and it should work. If not, who knows.

I added it immediately below the monetary value (as in the stock mission package) and it even shows up in the mission description, but upon completion i only got the cash. Maybe there's an additional tag missing. I'll keep snooping.

Hi,

I did a download of your Missionpack, and did a quick Testrun of the Kerbal SOI Missions.

but everytime i try to fly the Missions,i cant finish these, because the launchgoal never gets "finished",because it either stays red, saying "Launch from Launchpad" and/or "... from stable Position".

can someone tell me what i do wrong, because im allready using Launchclamps...

oh,btw im using this in Careermode, just for info...

Greetings

Roady

For the launch goal I usually click it before launch. Sometimes it takes a bit if it's blinking but once checked you don't have to worry about it again if you revert to pre-launch.

I also agree that it is basically pointless.

As far as science rewards, I have gotten stalled at Kastor III because I can't get enough science to research clamp-o-tron juniors. Maybe I just don't know the tech tree/ science gathering well enough to get 620 science in 6 missions, but it does seem like some science reward would be appropriate.

Otherwise, it's a great set of missions.

Bump. I have the same problem as Roady and can't find anything clickable in the MC window.

I have the latest MC version 0.36, the mode is "Flight Mode" (NOT test), 100% sure.

Also, when it says "Reach an altitude between 10 and 60km" when i stop at 40 and come back it doesn't count the objective as completed.

{

Are you sure mission controller or bootstraps are installed correctly? The objectives should have a button that pops up on the objectives window once completed.

Ok found the problem, these missions have been put together wrong when it comes to docking criteria.

In the words of the mission controller developer (Malkuth)...

"I have mentioned many times to Mission authors that Docking Goals should be by themselves in a separate goal. There is no way around the way KSP works with Vessel IDs. If you dock with a vessel the vessel ID changes. And if it changes to the wrong ID (doesn't take the Original vessel ID) the mission goal won't be complete."

Here is the page where he discusses how it should be done - http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/43645-%28KSP-23%29-Mission-Controller-Extended-%28Updated-Dec-17%29-%28BETA-37%29?p=746770&highlight=docking#post746770

So at present this mission pack is broken until docking is moved to its own separate goals.

Not sure if this thread is still active as no post from the OP in over a month, but if anyone knows how to fix these mission they have real potential! Was getting really into them but stuck on the broken Katurn missions.

It could be as easy as splitting them out form the other combined goals, yeah? -- Also -- how are the EVA missions affected by the new fuel limit? ;)

I added some science to the earlier missions for fun, but now realize it's hardly necessary. I'll take a stab at the docking goals.

Too bad the author of this pack has not been around. I started looking at this pack to see why everyone was saying launchgoal is causing problems. Not sure why they are being used this way in game. It was meant mostly for launching from other bodies.

Anyway other then the launch goal issues and possibly docking goal issues it's a very nice written mission pack.

I have pm the author asking if he wants it packaged with mce. If he does I will see about cleaning up the code a little before release.

Just heads up. Sent PM to Ihavealamp about adding this too the MCE Download. It will be in version .53 coming this week.

The new version of MCE will most likely in most situations fix all issues with Goals Not being Accepted. Changefile will be posted in MCE thread.

Hey everyone, mod author here.

Stopped playing KSP a week or so after releasing the last update, apologies for the absence. The launch goal issues were due to me changing the goal parameters, in an effort to be more efficient for future releases - bad on me there.

As for including it in the MCE download, malkuth, I'm certainly good with you doing that. If you run across anything that absolutely needs to be changed that's outside of your available workload, just let me know and I'll try to get it cleaned up.

Its all good Ihavealamp still have to work on some of the launchgoals, because MCE is still not behaving with them very well.
