There's a missing launchpad detail

Recommended Posts

This isn't really needed until Kerbin has weather, but I've noticed by their absence the ring of lightning rod towers that surround rocket launch sites.

Safety first, or at some point or other, or maybe in passing consideration. Whatever is most Kerbal.

Maybe build them in Career mode after a rocket takes a lightning hit?

There is never going to be random events that could damage a rocket. I'm pritty sure that includes lightning strikes

Lightning wouldn't need to affect the game in any way but it would look cool. Also lightning rods would add to the realism.

Why the hell is everyone so obsessed with realism in a game? It's NOT a simulator

And how the hell would a blinding flash that lasts half a second look cool? Cause that's what it is

KSP is part simulator and i guess thats what most people play it for. So why not add lightning rods just for the look? We already have all the other buildings as purely cosmetic details too, what's the difference?

This suggestion is talking about adding the towers, not the weather itself. The game has many non-functional structures and buildings to make the launch pad look like a launch pad. The towers are a huge visual component of this in many real launch sites:

The developers are strongly against random failures that the player has no control over. Lightening wouldn't necessarily fall into this category. If the game had weather, you'd be able to see a thunderstorm approaching and decide whether you can handle lightening damage or wait. That leaves the player in control.

This. Random failure is something like: "random number generator decides to blow your rocket up the next time you stage."

Circumstantial failure would be like: "your rocket was torn apart by high winds because you were an idiot and tried to launch your rocket in a hurricane."

Player induced failure is like: "your NERVA won't reactivate because you ran it too hot for too long. A few radiators would have easily fixed the problem before it happened." (damage through abuse).

Imagine how awesome it'd be to launch up through a thunder storm... and make it. Plus, think of all the science! Screw weather balloons, send a rocket with some Mystery Goo! We'll totally find out how to predict tornadoes! (Also, tornadoes.)
