Just think of tidal heating for a moment. Half Km tides will wreck a planet.

Add that it would brake the planets rotation pretty hard you will end up tidal locked long before you get advanced life.

And as you say the volcanism both from heating but also shifting plates around will make life very hard before it cools down.

Better to have the large moon and planet tidal locked to each other and pretty close.

This will add some extra fun effects like gravity being less under the moon.
