you're entitled to your opinion, you know - but i will say you have a rather misgiven perception of their intentions. You have seen nothing of what they have planned for career mode. it's not gonna be a millimeter deep when it's done. and so far, it is barely started.

From what they've told us, and from what I've seen, along with what I consider their track-record, yes, I believe it will be very, very shallow, and very disappointing.

there was no career mode before .22 - do you really mean to be come across as complaining about not getting a massively complicated system that is miles off from the central premise right about a month afterwards? it's sound like you are at the moment, unfortunately

Once again, from their track record, I have little hope.

relax - we're all friends here. This is not the Spore boards.

You don't speak for everyone.

If they didn't even take the time to develop career mode properly because the community got burned out with it within a week, are they going to only half-develop multiplayer? It seems as though the developers have a real problem with commitment, as now they've completely given the community and put collars on themselves to be completely guided by it.

I meant the tone of the discussion rather than the arguments itselfs. We should all calm down, really.

EDIT (after watching video on KSP TV)

To be honest, I'm really glad that Squad finally explained what's going on. I'm a little dissapointed of course, but it's understandable - they are the game designers and if they say that resources wasn't fun, they probably know what they are talking about. The most important things is that we are communicating again normally and that Squad responded to the issue raised by the community.

So whatever the future of resources will be, thank you Squad for answering! It must've been a tough choice to cut it out but you've earned a credit of trust guys and I'm sure something good will come out of it in the end.

I guess the community should really start thinking about the resource mod :)

This is not the impresion i am getting since they announced DLC

Devs need to eat, you know. If the money for KSP runs out, there will be no updates in the future, at all, ever. Better DLC than nothing.

"semi realistic space game with a sense of humor" to "spore but with physics too complicated for the new target audience of 8 years olds"

Huh? When did this happen? Care to give an example, because KSP still looks like a realistic space game to me.

specially now than multiplayer is actually planned

What's so bad about multiplayer? It's been wanted by many people for a long time, and being able to play the game with other people greatly enriches it. Just ask KMP users.

If they didn't even take the time to develop career mode properly because the community got burned out with it within a week

Career mode's only been out this update, either you're a bit too pessimistic about Squad or you've got a time machine :P

It's hard to calm down when it's been a year of false promises and lies.

That's a bit harsh. You're probably talking about resources and DLC, which have been delayed for good reasons: resources don't make sense without an economy, and DLC was just discussed as a hypothetical future idea when sales begin to wane (IIRC).

What people don't seem to understand is that resources are what gives anyone a reason to go outside Kerbin orbit in the career mode. Just saying "wow good job you get 50 science" won't keep people interested for long. You need substance, a real goal with real payoff. If you have no substance or payoff then you'll see everything as boring or a waste of time. The career mode will be nothing more than just sandbox with extra text.

Multiplayer is fine and well but deciding to jam it into the game half way through development is a horrible decision. They talked about wanting to focus on core mechanics many months ago and it feels like they totally forgot what the core even was.

Of course, it's in alpha. It's supposed to still be half-implemented. That's what alpha means.

"It's an alpha" is not an insta-fix excuse. Poor design and structure in ANYTHING during it's construction is totally unacceptable. Just because it's being made doesn't excuse it from being lazy and horribly unrefined, especially when they claim the gaps in update releases are to refine the game to the highest quality.

I fail to see how this quote can not also be applied to Resources, it has not yet been implemented, and if they added it then its getting jammed in at the same time as MP.

Because resources have been a planned and partially implemented feature for at least a year now. And please, don't even try to give me the "nothing is final" garbage. While I accept nothing is 100% set in stone, this was something teased and promised and worked on for far too long to drop immediately for a feature that's arguably unimportant.

I wish this was CMV so I could give you a delta. Multiplayer's pretty good, but you've helped me come to realise that it will distract from the true purpose of KSP. Multiplayer will be great for KSP, but there are greater things still around that deserve more attention.

I'm with you on this one. KSP is a released game that's still under heavy development.

I'm very disappointed in Squad. Once again they have alienated their original playerbase for the newer, more casual audience. To have a major feature like resources temporarily replaced by an uninteresting start of a career mode was one thing, but completely cancelling it is just wrong, especially after there has already been a good amount of work put into it. I am sure that resource mining would add more gameplay and more of a fun experience than Squad could ever hope to achieve with their career mode, and the decision to cancel this feature shows that they are fine with shallow gameplay. I've been playing this game for nearly two years now and although the original vision did not include resources I feel as if they have broken a promise.

Resources as a game system is significantly different from adding in multiplayer to a game built as singleplayer, that has elements that make multiplayer an extremely significant challenge. There is a very good reason the developers always said multiplayer was impossible to just add in an update before, and now suddenly they've changed their minds? As Feichinger said earlier, there's an awful lot of flip flopping on the games future from the developers.

I would find that a valid quote except for the fact they did a 180 and decided to jump on over to career mode. To me it's pretty obvious. Career mode crashed and burned on it's introduction, so Squad chickened out and went for something they knew the community couldn't resist, multiplayer.

I fail to see how this quote can not also be applied to Resources, it has not yet been implemented, and if they added it then its getting jammed in at the same time as MP.

Because multiplayer shouldn't be done without even finishing the single player first. This is oh-so-painfully an obvious cash grab by the developers to silence the community one last time.

Listen up, everyone. We all know there's frustration and disappointment going on - I get that, it's the same for me. But we can keep this nice and clean. There's no need to attack each other - we can all discuss this quite reasonably, no need for a lot of rage. The decision has been made, attacking fellow users does not get anyone anywhere here. These last few pages weren't really a masterpiece from anyone.

We have no intentions of silencing this debate, we just want to keep it clean - no need to hurt anyone's feelings, you know. *hugsandkissesandallthatfancystuff*

It's a pretty good explanation for why parts of the game are as rough as a badger's bum. Which they are. The aerodynamics are teeth-grindingly bad, for example. That will change. Good things come to those who wait.

I fail to see how you can compare something than was announced a year ago and then canned because "too hard" with something than we were told for a long time than "its not planned and isnt going to be" only for squad to do a whole 180º and jam in it

but then again, i have see the route squad and the fanbase has taken, a year ago the whole mention of DLC was a storm of criticism, now people are actually defending it

My $0.02

I don't really mind that resources were scrapped. In fact, I always thought it might be a bit too far outside of the scope of the game, which is exploration not colonization. I'm kind of happy that they came out and said this and put the doubts to rest. My condolences to those that are disappointed with the announcement.

If they are going to implement things they should at least put some commitment into it. One update giving us a not even half finished version of a game mode is not the brightest step to take in game development. Flip flopping has proved bad for SQUAD in the past, and it will undeniably prove itself yet again.

That's a bit extreme, but I see your point. I picked up Kerbal Space Program so I could colonise space, not to play with friends. It would be best if Squad stuck to KSP being a space program management game, and left marginal features to our smart and ahem friendly community.

For the users who've been playing the game longest, there's nothing left to explore.

While you're welcome to your opinion, I have to argue that there isn't really a link between resources and colonization. They're more of a tool for exploration than anything.

And here I thought the purpose of "Kerbal Space Program" was to run a space program and make money. How silly I was!
