Need help, Missed mun and threw me into sun orbit, How to get back to kerbin

Recommended Posts

Ok, I attempted a mun landing and somehow missed it by so much that I got flung into solar orbit, and have been trying to get back. I am using mechjeb 2 and still trying to figure out how to use it. So how do i, with the help of mechjeb, get back to kerbin? It is already set as my target. I have tried to figure this out for several hours now and cant get it back home. Thanks for any help all.

I attempted a mun landing and somehow messed up so badly it threw me into solar orbit, I am using mechjeb 2, and from what I see I only have smarta.s.s avail. How can I get back to kerbin? I have tried for hours real time and only end up missing kerbin. Any help would be appriciated, I dont want to loose this ship as I have over 1k science on it.

EDIT Landed safely on Kerbin,

I cant help with MeckJeb as I dont use any mods, do you have enough fuel to burn into any sort of Kerbin orbit? Docking station attached? If no is the answer to both the previous questions I don't like your chances of recovery, but I am no expert by any means.. : )

how much deltaV you have left? You need to rendezvous again with Kerbin SOI, which may take some time. Basically you need to change your orbit to one slower if you are ahead Kerbin or faster if you are behind Kerbin. You can try do that, or just use mechjeb maneuver planer to do a hohmann transfer (you have to select Kerbin as target first).

Good luck :)

In general you need to perform a correction - usually at either Ap or Pe - to get a new intercept with the Kerbin SOI.

But where to do it and what correction to perform depends on the orbit you're on.

It may also depend on amount of fuel you have left.

The thing you invariably need to do is to select Kerbin as target in Map mode and play with maneuver node until you get an intercept. Closest approach markers on your trajectory should help you with that. But finding a maneuver which will do what you want without you running out of fuel before you manage to finish it may be tricky.

Ran out of fuel awhile ago, but I ended up enabling the fuel cheat to get this guy back home, Like i said, has over 1000 science I do not want to loose lol. I am working on soi right now, I figured out how to get into soi again after messing with eve and was able to enter orbit with eve. so I am down to just playing with manuver nodes to figure out soi entry for kerbin. I will update if I get this guy back.

Also one more question, do we have to unlock jet packs for eva or should they be on the spacesuits by default?

With great difficulty, depending on how much fuel you have left. Mechjeb has a rendezvous calculator that may be able to automatically pilot you toward an encounter, but it's no magic solution if you don't have the delta V. Also last I checked, it really likes to start from circular orbits, which an accidental slingshot manouevre probably hasn't given you.

Give you've apparently shot past Mun and into a stellar orbit, I guess there's part of your orbit that is still near Kerbin's orbit? One option could be to be very patient, use maximum time warp and keep orbiting around until the two markers (for your ship position and planet position at closest point) to get close enough that a minor burn will get an intercept. This may take quite a few orbits, though!

I also recommend hitting F5 to quicksave before committing to any burns, so you don't waste fuel on something that doesn't work. If you mess up, hold F9 down for a couple of seconds to reload from the last time you pressed F5.

rendezvous calculator is your friend as technicalfool said. best suggestion I can make is put up another ship in orbit quick, and make it your RV point. Then let mechjeb do the rest and pray you have enough fuel.

For more fun, look into aero breaking, but I cant help on that, as Im still learning it.

First of all, aerobreaking would imply you breaking due to air. You do NOT want that. Sorry, it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine.

Second of all, don't listen to him about the aerobraking being fun. Lithobraking however...!
