Science not getting awarded

Recommended Posts

This question has probably already been asked, but I wasn't able to locate an answer, if there is one.

I have the Goo canister and the Lab Jr, and have been unable to collect the science at recovery that it says I am supposed to get (i.e. the +25 for a Lab observation in space) I save the reports, return to Kerbin, and when I recover I get nothing. I have the modules intact, I have tried recovery from land and water. Same result. Please advise.

You can get the full science points one-time per experiment and biome. So if you take two Goo containers to the Launchpad and examine both, both will initially show full points. But when you return the craft, one container gets scored, the other one will eventually show 0 points.

So in the end there's no point in firing the same experiment multiple times in the same biome. Just take it elsewhere :)

But transmitting gives you much less science? I'm going to try a higher orbit and see if that does something. The only science I've been able to collect from the lab is doing an observation on the launchpad then recovering.

This is a dumb question, but I'm going to ask anyway. Are you recovering you assemblies with the science modules attached? For example, if you exit your capsule after landing and then recover, you only recover your astronaut. If this fits, try checking the tracking station to see if you can recover your capsules.

Necro I know...

But i am having this issue now as well.

I build a rocket, strap on mystery goo containers, launch and do some sciency stuff. I examine the goo containers, do some crew reports etc. the crew reports do not matter if I transmit or keep, after I recover the vessel my science pool does not change. I still have no science to research any new parts. during the flight the crew reports and the containers both show that I should be getting some science for them after recovery, but the end of mission screen skips the science tab altogether, and my total science never goes up.

As they said, are the science parts still attached to your ship when you recover while in the ship? if all else fails, you can get out of the ship and right click the science parts to take the data out.

yes parts are on the ship...

I have don some more testing, and it seems that if I do not "transmit" any reports I get this bug. But if I actually "transmit" at least one crew report or something then it will recover all the science as it should.

I suspect Zwer.ch is probably on to something. You don't actually get credited with the science until you recover the ship (assuming you didn't transmit it). Particularly if this is high orbit/low orbit stuff it's easy to do the experiment more than once, and when you actually turn in the second one you won't get full value.

The question is are you getting something? Because for goo containers I think you have to do the same measurement four or five times before you don't get anything at all. If you're getting nothing there probably is a problem. What mods are you running?

i am getting nothing.

basically it goes like this...

1. do a bunch of science stuff. new biome do every science thing available.

2. recover ship.

3. no science awarded.

or like this...

1. do a bunch of science stuff. new biome do every science thing available.

2. Transmit atleast one item such as a crew report or what ever.

3. Recover ship

3. Full science awarded.

I have not had a chance to try uninstalling mods to try and find the culprit, but I am thinking it is either [x]Science which lists all available science you can do and shows your progress etc. or science alert which will alert you with an audible indicator as you change biomes to let you know new science is available. I suspect these 2 just because they are related to the science section. not because I have seen any bugs with them specifically.

unfortunately I do not have a lot of time for KSP recently so I have not had a chance to try and track tis down yet.

You'll need to have a look inside the KSP output_log or player_log. This type of issue is usually caused when an exception is thrown by a mod during the vessel recovery or science events. If you post the log somewhere we'll likely be able to tell you exactly which mod is responsible

Kerbonauts,

Please realize this is a necro, but a relevant one. Make sure you answer the current question...

As for solving Bit Fiddler's problem... This is one of those things we will need a bit more details on exactly what you're doing. There are a couple places where the science components are having problems, but in general they don't suffer from a generic "getting no science" problem.

Cheers,

~Claw

I know I am not Bit Fiddler, though I have to say, I am now having this exact same problem. On top of that, my contracts do not remain completed. Here is the problem;

Warning, tl;dr incoming!!

[CODE]1) Accept 2 contracts (Launch a new ship & Reach 5000m). Science Points currently at 8.4;
2) Build ship (It is just a command module with rocket);
3) Launch ship;
4) Credit shows immediately for Contract A (Green check mark). I open and hit trash bin.;
5) Hit 5000m mark and watch as rocket runs out of pre-planned fuel limit;
6) See Green Check mark for Contract B appear and do same as above;
7) Let force glide me to ~7km and do Crew Report. CR says around 8.5 science gain.
8) Land safely back on ground with parachutes;
9) Do EVA report. ER says 3.5 science gained;
10) Recover Vehicle.
11) Frown as Science Tab is greyed out, only Middle and Crew tabs have anything on them.
12) Check R&D....Still stuck at 8.4 SP. Keep in mind, both contracts were suppose to award SP as well;
13) Check Admin building, both Contracts still listed as active. No contracts listed as completed.

Ok, there you go, a full and complete account of the entire issue. I have also checked the KSP.log and found nothing to explain this type of issue, specially since it spans two different parts of the game. Now, as for my mods, I will place those below;

Well, hopefully someone here can help. I am sure it has to be one of the mods, or something lol.

EDIT: First off, because I forgot to mention it above, I always click 'Keep Data'. Secondly, I have been doing further testing (I have even removed the ScienceAlert mod to see if that was the issue) and have determined that the problems start after the first bit of earned science.

I started a new career, picked up the first two contracts, completed them, got 20 science, in total, from my launch, spent it on the first two upgrades. I then upgraded the admin building (something I didn't do before either btw), got 4 more contracts. I launched a new ship into the air and reached 32km. Two of those contracts were, reaching 25km and testing out realchute conic nose parachute. Both of them were completed before I landed (got green complete checkmarks and clicked the trash can icon). Landed the craft, recovered it. This time, I wasn't expecting much science (just what was offered by those contracts) but still, greyed out tab and both of those contracts are still listed as 'incomplete'.

Well, I am at a loss now. Also, just so you know, this is something very repeatable. I don't know how yet; however, while this is happening in my 32bit Windows version, I decided to test it within my 64bit Linux version and sure enough, new game, new career, same issues. The only thing that is identical with them is some of the mods.

EDIT: One more thing. Since I have the KSP Achievements mod installed, I decided to take a look at it again and noticed not even those are saving after the first flight. So, basically, what I have going on is this;

1) First flight works fine. I gain science, complete contracts, and gain achievements;

2) All flights after that act like simulations. No money, no science, no contracts, no achievements. Nothing remains completed after clicking 'Recover Vessel'.

EDIT: I can also verify it works perfectly fine without any mods. I shall now try the long, arduous journey of removing one mod at a time and testing a new game. Unless someone else has already figured out which mod is causing this, I expect this to take me roughly a week or two lol.

EDIT: Even further information for those whom might be able to help. As I was doing some testing, I decided to watch my KSP.log and see what was going on. I shall post some of the things I've noticed below.

[LOG 06:36:21.606] KK: Funds changed - 11955.4804918169 because VesselRecovery
[LOG 06:36:21.609] [SR] Adding funds: 1147.73828125, New total: 11955.4804918169

<b><#8BED8B>Completion Rewards:</></>
<#B4D455>£13,242 </>
<#E0D503>¡73 </>

As you can see from the above, contracts were completed and credit was given as due; however, after the vessel recovery, it shows a different story, notice the Fund changed section.

[LOG 06:41:56.657] Added 0 (0) reputation: 'VesselRecovery'.
[LOG 06:41:56.660] KK: Funds changed - 13659.3153412938 because VesselRecovery

[LOG 06:41:56.664] [KS Exp] onVesselRecovered: ProtoVessel
[LOG 06:41:56.666] KK: Resetting SpaceCenter to KSC

As you can see, the funds were dropped from the 25,197 to 13,659. Here is the entire log (I've tried to put this on a pastebin like site, but the entire log file is 3mb and causes browser crashing, so used file hosting instead). I've tried to look through it but I am not really noticing anything wrong. I see an error about there not being a KK.cfg file within the save folder, but that is all, and I doubt that would cause this type of issue.

http://www.filedropper.com/ksp_2. It has only the KSP.log within it.

EDIT: Well now, I guess I was just saved a lot of tedious work. Started up KSP to find out there was an update to Flight Manager for Reusable Stages. Decided to look at the changelog and saw this;

v0.3.02

bug fix: Recovering main vessel leads into mission progress loss

Anyways, updated and tested my game and sure enough, problem is gone. So, this is to Bit Fiddler and the original poster as well, if you have FMRS installed, update it.

Some off-topic content has been removed.  In addition, note that this gameplay question is from several years ago, so all the people involved have presumably long since solved their issues, and any "helpful" advice now is moot.  Accordingly, locking the thread to prevent further confusion.  If someone has a relevant gameplay question about current KSP, feel free to start your own thread.  :)
