SOPA is dead!

There is nothing wrong with making provision in the law to protect the valid ownership of intellectual property. The problem with SOPA is the 'no due process' concept - that the law would give owners to shut something down without taking it through courts.

SOPA might be all but dead but we got more issues to worry about now. Such as:

and

The video is about the possible ramifications that the Megaupload take down can have and other is new bill that is actually worse than SOPA.

So now we must battle once again to prevent this bill from slipping through.

I don\'t think anyone would have a huge problem with this bill if congress would stop adding all of this extra 'fat' as it goes through the system. The original idea could have passed, but then they thought they could through in more crap behind people\'s backs.

If something like this does pass in the future, we want a surgical procedure of what is and what is not copyrighted, not a clean sweep.

SOPA isn\'t dead. The letters I received from my congress and senator members indicated it was merely shelved for later reviewal (pulled from current discussions) and to be possibly replaced with something called the 'Open IP' act.

I would like to give you an update as to where the proposed legislation is in the process. The Protect IP Act was scheduled to go to the Senate floor for a procedural vote on January 23, 2011. Due to the effective grassroots advocacy and public outcry against the bill, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has pulled the proposed legislation from the floor calendar.

-Maria Cantwell; United States Senator

Now, I encourage Congress to consider the OPEN Act, which addresses illegal piracy and security while keeping the Internet open for free speech and innovation. The OPEN Act would build on the existing legal framework for resolving unfair acts in the importation of articles, including those that infringe a valid and enforceable U.S. patent, copyright, or trademark. Through the International Trade Commission, violations of digital trade can be investigated and websites found to be 'willfully' and 'primarily' infringing on copyright material can be shut down. The ITC will create a transparent and adversarial process where all parties would receive due process and IP rules can be consistently applied. Neither the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House nor the Protect IP Act in the Senate allow for similar due process.

From what it seems, the open IP act does not look that bad.

I do think we should at least limit piracy.

I rejoice knowing that such evils shall not rise again.

Oh, they will rise again and under a guise that may not be so easily defeated. If they attach it to this upcoming child pornography bill, they will pass with flying colors as *no one* will vote against a kiddie porn bill.

Arrr!

I urge everyone to vote against it if this happens, and I urge the congress to not do this.
