How to make a video?

This may have been asked here before what what is a good program to use for the video capture?

I really like Fraps but it chews up hard drive space like candy. You need about a gig per minute of 1080p.

Most any recording software would do that, though, as you can't play KSP and compress video at the same time with most computers.

Can you have it store the video onto a portable HDD? Because if so then I have a 640GB drive I can use

Assuming the drive mounts as a drive letter, I don't see why not. I'd get the demo for Fraps and try it before ponying up the cash though.

I found a program recently called "dxtory" that impacts FPS less then Fraps does.

Supposedly BandiCam is one of the better products, but it's a bit expensive. I have FRAPS and I've used it, and yes, I shot about 90GB of video to put together a two and a half minute video. So unless you have a dedicated drive, it's going tobe expensive. But for any of these things you'll want to have a decent computer. If you can't run KSP with a decent frame rate normally, these programs won't help it much regardless of the one you choose. If you want to do commentary, I would recommend using Audacity instead of the built-in recording for FRAPS. That way you can edit the track in yourself and handle volume levels separately, but that's more on the editing side of things.

Open Broadcast Software is a free program which can record straight to hard drive, I believe. I use it for twitch streaming, so I don;t know what kind of quality it does.

Bandicam and KSP don't run well together on my computer I've used it to run Minecraft and FTL and record 30fps fullscreen video in both with no problems, but KSP turns into a quite literal slideshow with far less than 1fps. FRAPS never has this problem.Never used dxtory or obsproject.

NVIDIA shadowplay is free and doesn't impact performance.

Only issues are, it works only on NVIDIA 6xx or higher cards, it only works in fullscreen (for now) and it creates variable FPS videos (for now and it can be fixed)
