exercise in fairing aesthetics.*Working Mun return Vehicle* Pic heavy.

Recommended Posts

Hi all, again,

Ive made some changes to the Saturn V I made to reduce the part count from 1300 to 900! Yay? Well at least it no longer crashes KSP!

Ive kept the new fairing for the payload LM as it looks so nice when they release. But I got rid of the interstage fairings to reduce parts.

I had to remove half the fuel from the top two stages and she flys like a dream now! So easy to get into high orbit.

Anyway instead of me waffling on about how to fly it I have taken a series of pictures showing the various parts of the flight.

So pic spam in

Phew..

Steam wont let me see the other ones... Some may not appear as they seem to be taking ages to upload.

And there it is.

Very easy to fly, smooth framerates after the first stage and plenty of fuel.

The fuel in the lander acent stage is quite tight. But there's enough RCS to help if needed.

I will put it on Spaceport if you want to try it out.

Thanks for looking.

*ORIGINAL POST*

Hi all,

I wanted to get some feedback on some fairings I have been trying out.

I used them on my Kom-Sat 1 satellite launcher I made recently. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/63229-Kom-Sat-by-Majorjim-An-exercise-in-fairing-asthetics

I found them to be a good way to make small detailed fairings. They do have a few drawbacks though,

Using them adds a lot of parts and they appear to shimmer which looks a bit unrealistic.

Nevertheless I wanted to try to use them on an Apollo style rocket. I made a single Kerbal 2 stage Mun lander inspired by Giggleplex and GusTurbos pico LMs. and then built a Saturn V around it.

The LM payload fairings split into 4 and are releasing cleanly. This is still very much a WIP and there is lots to fix before shes Mun ready.

I will add that the current part count is around 1300. I could reduce this a lot by using a different fairing method on the interstages.

I also want to find a way of getting rid of the stock firing on the CSM motor. It looks crappy.

Anyway, pics!

There it is.

More work to do, but she will be a Mun return capable craft soon.

If I can stop it crashing my PC.....

Thanks for looking.

That looks just about great. I have one question, though: how did you make that Launch Escape System? Mine always become really ugly, with a small but still ugly fuel tank on top.

I just used the little solid fuel rockets turned inside the frame work. Just make sure the nozzles clear the seperatron or the thrust will be blocked.

... this is even more part intensive than the Munbug fairing!! Looks good though. Are they made from inverted solar panels? Must be a lot lighter than my i-beams.

Yeah thats it, the little panels. We really need some stock fairings from Squad...
