[WIP] Terraforming

I was watching Firefly a while ago, and it occurred to me that obviously the next step for Kerbals after colonizing all the planets is to terraform them. Now that Alternis Kerbol has been released (which NovaSilisko has kindly allowed me to reuse code from), I've started working on a mod to terraform the Kerbol system.

No download yet because I still have a few severe bugs to work out (for example, Minmus' atmosphere extends to the edge of its SOI making timewarp impossible), but expect it soon.

Current status:

  • Mun terraformed.
  • Minmus…sort of terraformed. The "lakes" are blue now, and there is a very thin atmosphere, but it extends to the edge of the SOI. Also the scaled-space model needs to be updated.
  • Duna has been terraformed.
  • Tylo has been terraformed.
  • Dres, Eve and Moho have had atmospheres added and scaled-space textures updated, but are refusing to change the surface color.

Mun:

Minmus:

Duna (clouds are from city lights and clouds mod and need to be made less red):

Tylo:

Moho (only poles are habitable due to proximity to star):

Planned features:

  • Terraform all remaining planets except for Jool and Gilly (and maybe also Bop and Pol).
  • Add science definitions for atmospheres.
  • Tech tree integration: only terraform planets in career mode after very advanced nodes are unlocked (possibly tie in with Interstellar)
  • Add actual oceans to certain planets?
  • Configs for cloud mod

So is this just them already terraformed or are you planning that you can actually set up bases and terraform them to these?

Currently it's just them already terraformed. But the plan is to allow to set up bases and terraform them once I figure that out.

If you can, it would be nice to have some special features on the transformed/half-transformed planets. Like the aequatorial line being speckled with green while the caps are still barren - or the whole planet being still desert-like, but with first lakes and ponds in some spots. That way we could actually drive along on the surface and see the surroundings change little by little as we go by.

I like your idea a lot.

I think Duna looks a bit too green, actually. Maybe have some areas of it be green, lush, and possibly have some water (if you decide to add some ocean), while most of the planet is still a red desert?

Oooh, and terraforming Eve... might actually be harder than Venus, due to oceans made of rocket fuel. Put too much oxygen into the atmosphere of Eve, and it's just a matter of time before it all runs amok.

EDIT: Oh, and to service all those colonies, the Kerbals must have invented an efficient way of getting into orbit. Mass Drivers? (Hint, Hint)

EDIT2: Do you think a correctly placed mass driver on Minmus could sling a spaceship into a Kerbin return trajectory? It might need to be fine-tuned with engines, but isn't it only something in order of 500 m/s that is needed to return from Kerbin?

I can adjust the density of the atmosphere, but I don't think I can specify what percentage of it is oxygen.

Ok so you're pretty much handling the plugin coding then I take it? This is a mod project that I absolutely love the idea of so I was going to look into some terraforming parts and the plugins necessary for them since I seem to have misunderstood when you said "once I figure that out".. Just have a growing interest in KSP mod development and would love to be able to contribute to something before trying my own unoriginal idea ventures. I've got some ideas on how some of the real-time terraforming could work if you'd be interested, thought I wouldn't be surprised if they're bout the same ideas you have :P

An ocean on Duna is on my list, and in fact what I am currently working on.

Perhaps the Kerbals took atmosphere from Eve and brought it to the other planets?

The problem is that Minmus isn't tidally locked, so it would only work when it's pointing the right way.
