[WIP] Talisar Aerospace - Current project Large Upper Stage coop with Chaka Monkey ES

Welcome to my all new WIP thread. I'm hoping that posting my projects here will enable me to find what ideas I have that people are interested in as well as help me focus on those projects so I can bring them to completion.

My current project is inspired by the Large Upper Stage for the Boeing Space Launch System in cooperation with YANFRET from Chaka Monkey Exploration Systems (who brought this idea to my attention and will be using his considerable texturing skills to bring this project to fruition)

This is what we will be endeavoring to reproduce:

Basic modelling has been completed, and we're down to modelling the equipment shelf and fine details, then it's off for texturing:

Please let us know what you think. Questions and suggestions are always welcome!

The model looks great so far.

Just a couple things though:

How is a 2.5m engine with a flat "base" going to fit on the curved LOX tank? Will the attachment point essentially be at the base of the straight cylindrical part?

Also, if you placed a 3.75m stack separator below a 2.5m engine, it would create a 2.5m interstage separator. I think NovaPunch has 3.75m interstage sections, but they're not very reliable. I don't know if it's something you can control or if the game handles it, but could you make 3.75m stack separators attach to the LH2 tank?

The equipment shelf is going to be mounted under the bottom (LOX) tank, which will provide space for equipment placement and engine mounting. That part is the next to be modelled.

We did discuss making stack separaters for the top of the LH2 tank, as well as an interstage adapter/decoupler so it can be used in an iCPS configuration such as this:

Sorry, I meant a decoupler below the LOX but which attaches to the bottom of the LH2 with a 3.75m interstage adapter, so that you can create a stage configuration like this:

Hey I'll take this one

Yep SO unless we make a bespoke shroud then we would standardize it to the KW Decoupler Shroud. What ever size you're using, as long as the shroud is scaled with it you're all set. The plan at this time is to have a lower attach point below the engines which will fix it to the lower stage shroud. That way the engines are hanging from the tanks and not part of the structural path, making it easy to change the upper stage engine config without a major redesign of your launch vehicle.

In this picture you can see where the 6.3 Meters Kerbol (0.75 x 8.4 meter) version will go in the Chaka Monkey heavy lift system

So naturally there is a .75 scale 8.4 meter (6.3 Meters Kerbol) decoupler shroud (KW) from the bottom of the upper tank to the lower stage.

You should make a version of the single engine model seen in the Orion pic that is compatible with Sumghai's SDHI Orion-like service module. It would make for some seriously awesome Duna missions (I think this can be done by scaling down your existing parts by a factof of 0.667).

It's going to be set up so engines would be added separately. We're going to have a centerline mounting node, as well as the 4 other mounting nodes. This way you can set it up using either the single, dual, or quad engine configuration.

-edit- I'm also modelling the part so it will scale easily from the more true-to-life size down to Kerbal standards. The scaled down version will have a 3.75m upper tank and 2.5m lower.

Okay, nice. Yeah, it would still need to be given a 0.667 scale multiplier to work with Sumghai's service module (2.5m)

That's an interesting point I had neglected to remember the correct size of the SDHI system. You're absolutely right we need to make it available in several sizes and you can count on that.

Very nice models. Im happy to see so much collaboration on the chaka monkey project

When I started talking about that here I wasn't sure what people would think, but so many talented and creative enthusiasts have expressed their support and offered to help and done so, I feel like we're all working on this together. In many ways that creative collaboration is as gratifying as any other part of the project.

Super excited for this, i have tried to make similar things on my own with misc. parts from mods and it never look right but the closest i get adds like 46 parts to my craft lol :D

Yep that was my finding as well. Now you get to add 1 plus two fairings and because the lines of force will go through the structure and not the engines you may not even need radial strut connectors, we'l see.

If the Fairings are just going to ba a single part of predetermined size, could you not just create a payload base on the top of the Upperstage as one separate part that uses the moduleJettison to auto create the fairings, and removes them when decoupled, or by right clicking, in the same way as the LV-N?
