maccollo
Jesus christ, how much Dv do you have with that transfer stage?!6 km/s, which assuming a midway plane change is just barely enough for a powered capture around Venus. After the capture I aerobreak very slowly and gradually to lower the orbit.Speaking of aerobreaking...So that failed... It seems that the FAR aerodynamic failure feature doesn't take into consideration if there is a heat shield in front of the object or not. This is problematic...So how do you get to the ground and back up after you land on Venus with that, maccollo? Maybe you could use an "elevator"Lots and lots of ladders XD.Of course that adds lots of parts and thus lag. But now since I have to redesign the lander I might try something else. sgt_flyer
update on the helicopter - this new version is much more stable, with a new bearing.(i might make a dual rotor version to not have to use the vernors as counterotation - they limit the autonomy to 4 minutes )as an added bonus, a free bearing like this one allows for autorotation to the ground when you run out of fuel (descent at roughly 5m/s - 15m/s if you apply the brakes to stop the propeller from spinning - although it will make the whole craft spin ) i added 3 disabled standard control surfaces on the tip of each wing of the rotor, it gives it quite impressive lifting capabilities - (it takes off at less than 50% power - with a full S3-3600 tank + a cupola underneath it) Edited August 29, 2014 by sgt_flyer
Giggleplex777
Sgt_flyer: Can you help me make compact wheel bearings? I want to use them on my propeller motors to reduce friction but I can't seem to get anything less than 2.5m in diameter to work.
sgt_flyer
I'll see what i can do Giggleplex, unfortunately, the collision mesh on 1.25m parts and below is quite bumpy - and those landing gears take a lot of space
Rithsom
I'll see what i can do Giggleplex, unfortunately, the collision mesh on 1.25m parts and below is quite bumpy - and those landing gears take a lot of space I would also like to see a good design. The rotor keeps falling out of the cubic octagonal strut loops that I use, and any wheel bearing that I made has too much friction.
sgt_flyer
@Rthsom yeh, it's already hard to do reliable 2.5m wheel bearings it's another step up in difficulty to minaturise everything horizontal bearings are another step up in difficulty (as you have to fight gravity too)one of the origins of the 'friction' with wheel bearings is the landing gear's suspension system - the wheel follows the low poly collision mesh of the part, and if pressed too much, the damper tries to 'force' the wheel out, which 'push' it away from the edges of the collision mesh.not enough pressure from the wheel, and the parts can fall through during operations Edited August 29, 2014 by sgt_flyer

Roflcopterkklol
Someone want to try this engine out for me? On start up hit 1 and wait for the turbo jets to wind up to 100% hit 2 and 3 to fire up all the other engines then release, you can fly it straight up.At about 18000m cut the turbo jets and wind the throttle back to 50% when the rapiers switch modes.i did chuck some mono and rcs on it so it has some control in space, you can orbit it no worries as well. Just remember it is only an engine and it is not a rocket.Im just not 100% sure on the design of it, thinking maybe i have gone too big for it to ever be practical. If someone wants to have a play around with it and see if they can get something smaller with the same performance going i would love to see it and get some tips off you.http://www./download/1eb2e3gj75lei43/Goliath+engine.craft100% stock parts so no mods needed to have a toy around. If you really want you can add more air intakes, i have not because i want to add the shell to see where everything needs to go before doing the entire air system. If you are wondering what it is for, this is the engine for a SSTO space plane, not exactly sure what i want the ship to do once it is finished, i mean it will look damn cool that is for sure. Roflcopterkklol
Well i updated the Goliath engine, single stage to mun anyone? idk i still feel like a smaller engine could do better, really about half the size of the goliath engine but i can not seem to get it to work. sgt_flyer
ok, here's what i made after building more stable bearings for small 1.25m engines (here, it's for a Torque based engine - powered by reaction wheels and RTG's - original idea from Giggleplex777, i mainly built a brand new bearing for increased engine stability)the K-25 twin propeller aircraft.(note, require quite a bit of pitch - though it can fly with only trims set, no need for SAS operations : activate the parking brake before attempting to start the engines.stage 1 time to decouple the engines.switch vessels to get to the first engine.with the camera in front of the propeller : Trim the roll (alt + keyboard roll direction key) to the maximum in the good direction (when your camera is in front of the aircraft, the left propeller should turn counterclockwise - alt + Q)switch to the second engine to repeat the roll trim, in the opposite direction (for the right propeller with the camera in front of the aircraft, press alt + E) (basically, it will make the propellers turn in the opposite direction of what you would normally expect on a real plane )once all engines are running at full power, switch back to the aircraft, and release the parking brakes. (note, be sure that SAS is disabled on the engines )wait until you reach 35+ m/s before trying to takeoff to stop the engines, switch to the engines, and press alt + X for each engine.top level speed around 50m/s.the standard surface controls in the middle of the aircraft are disabled, to prevent thrust coming from the infiniglide bug, the others are set to pitch / yaw or roll.it's just an experiment on bearing for 1.25m parts though so be careful to not gain to much speed while diving, or the engines might stall here's the .craft file for those who would want to test it out - or check on the bearings.http://www./view/b1dxxv61o04hj0f/K-25.craft Edited August 30, 2014 by sgt_flyer

Roflcopterkklol
Well Goliath mk1 is starting flight tests. Flies better than Zeus did at this stage and i am fairly happy with the aesthetics, thoughts? Still no idea what the point behind this is, but then, does KSP really have a point? (made it so you can drop out of the cockpit and walk through the internals)Update on the flight testing, it is interplanetary without refueling.I am pretty pleased. SpaceXray
Decided to start working on my somewhat silly Venus mission again.Finished assembling the hardware in orbit. The whole things weighs a bit over 2000 tonnes and is 140 metres long. The burn time on the transfer stage is 3 hours and 30 minutes, and everything lags to hell. Really hope the lander still works in this patch XDhttps://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/22015656/venusMission.jpgWait aren't you that RSS nut on YouTube? You also did that single launch grand tour if I recall. Man I am a huge fan! Your builds are just insane! Talk about big rockets....

The problem is that the propeller acts like a turbine while flying and will try to rotate the opposite way. The faster you go, the more prominent this effect is, ultimately creating an equilibrium between drag and trust. Using smaller propellers allows for a higher top speed at the expense of lower overall thrust.
