Love the mod but i've been having the icons for the ribbons and availability replaced with the red question mark. I've tried installing it on a clean copy of ksp with and without mod admin and still cant figure it out. any ideas? thanks in advance

1. Try to start KSP directly from the KSP home directory

2. Extract the archive directly into the KSP home folder:

GameData

+ Nereid

+ + FinalFrontier

Don't extract FinalFrontier directly into GameData!

EDIT: I have just corrected my answer a to make it a bit more clear now. Just make sure the Nereid subfolder is extracted in GameData, i.e. extract the archive into to KSP home folder. Unfortunately you have to check every addon how it has to be installed. Some choose to include the GameData folder in the archive, some don't. I have choosen the first option, so just extract it into wherever KSP is installed on your system and don't mess with the folder structure afterwards. If it still fails to load the ribbons, I will have to add log message to analyze this further.

Notebooks... I hate them. Just typing this a second time, because the first time the notebook shuts down just while I was typing this. KSP was still running in the background and had drained the battery after a few minutes... and its a lot easier to create typos on this kind of keyboard...

I seem to have a bug. The first kerbal into space ribbon keeps getting awarded over and over again

I have just tested it with 0.2.2b and could not reproduce this. Can you tell me a) which version you are running and B) what exactly have you done to get multiple First In Space ribbons?

This is a nice mod to add personality to the kerbals. Out of curosity, do you plan to add ranks to the Kerbals? It's just ribbons and rank are linked in my mind and it would be kinda cool to see a Jeb with say 30 ribbons and a Rank insignia of General/Admiral.

Anyway, this is looking great so far, and I hope you continue to work on this.

Neil Amrstrong was a US Navy Ensign, don't you think general/admiral would be kinda an overkill?

Well... kerbals tend to create solutions that are some kind of an overkill, so this idea would not be THAT bad. ;)

To answer the original question: I will first get rid of all quirks and bugs that are in the code. After this is done perhaps we could think about some kind of ranking system based on experience, flight hours or whatever. And hopefully some day Squad will include a similar system as mine, so that FF is no longer necessary.

Let me say this first: I am NOT a modder. The best I can do is edit configs, so forgive me if I am suggesting a stupid thing.

Couldn't you check for the ModuleDockingNode module? Or does KAS use that as well to make parts attachable?

I have checked the (sub)modules of a involved part already and haven't found any kind of useful pattern so far. There are attachment rules and some have a boolean flag for docking, but they are always false. I could test for the name "LargeDockingport" for example but if some addon uses different names it wont work. And thats my problem: I'm just still looking for some kind of attribute in the KSP classes that have the information to detect the docking ability of a part. It has to be there... somewhere... but where?

Just to be picky, Armstrong's rank on leaving active service was Ensign but he served in the Naval Reserve for eight years and was a Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) when he resigned his commission. He was actually a civilian as an astronaut.

I second this idea to add ranks to the Kerbals, but I feel like Squad has focused on not making the game militaristic (i.e. not adding weapons or hostile aliens) As such, perhaps we could see ranks that are less military, maybe like Rookie, or Commander, or something else (I can't really think of anything good at the moment)

Perhaps we could even see specific titles based on the types of awards given, as well as the volume of awards. For example, a Kerbal who has a lot of EVA medals might be a mission specialist, while one who has a lot of docking and orbiting experience would be more of a pilot.

Call it titles instead of ranks if your worried about semantics. Even an office has people of seniority and a way to address them in a professional manner. Kerbals should not be any different.

Also non-military ships use ranks as well. Pilots in commercial airlines have ranks as well.

I don't think its an issue personally.

I'd like to see any ranks added as user-editable. That way, those who want military ranks can have them, and those that don't won't.

Or better: two scales of ranks. One for the military Kerbals, and one for the civilian Kerbals.

Neried. I have a game play workaround for this in case its simply not possible to differentiate "KAS docking" from real docking.

Before kerbals under my management have clearance to perform any EVA salvage, repair, resupply or maintenance they must have already earned their EVA technician qualification via real docking.

Worked great thanks

for whatever reason Launching KSP from mod admin was causing the bug. Launching from steam or directly from the folder worked fine

hi Jpkerman

What about using similar positions as described here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronaut_ranks_and_positions

I was thinking about adding a Kerbal age mod, I think that the ranks and then adding age to your kerbals would be a nice gameplay element. for example when a kerbal reaches 65 he has to retire from space missions and he goes in the a retirement page that shows their entire mission past.

I love this mod though This got me playing more ksp :)

The fix in 0.2.2c should fix 99,99% of those situations. But any non docking operation with two vessels (non EVA) that triggers a docking event will still award docking ribbons. But I don't think such events exists in KSP. But I could be wrong of course.

This looks really interesting. I won't add this to my current career save, because it seems impractical to assign the ribbons for missions that already happened. But for when I restart career the next time (propably .24?) I really look forward to using this :)
