The Main Problem With Kerbal Space Program Is....

... the damned game is just incredible. Add a few mods and it becomes AWESOME.

Most games give you the game and then there are a few community mods that expand on it slightly. I remember modding an old game called Freespace back in the day and it was well... amazing to do so (especially as the game files were encrypted). We managed to add new parts to the game, new ships etc... but in comparison to KSP it is like a 5 year old kid with a toy compared with NASA.

KSP's community expansions to a game that isn't even finished is just freaking awesome. I get tired of the game, go away for a few weeks and come back and there are a whole lot of new stuff available FOR FREE. Compare it to something like Call of Duty DLC where we have to pay silly amounts of money just to get a couple of maps.

Yup... KSP is the game that never ends. Thank god Squad have supported modding from the get go.

I have to agree! KSP's community is not only the best modding community I've seen but also the most Mature (compared to other gaming forums) and friendliest. The community alone is by far the best I've been a member of and with Squad on top of it all listening to what we want and adding what we want to the game just makes it even better!

Good post.

My coworker estimated that I had put some 1000+ hours into this game based on his recollections of me talking and the screenshots I'd put up. Modding it only increases my interest in the game. I'm not anywhere near bored of it, short breaks take care of that.

I'd have to add that the performance increases in 0.23 are excellent. I've never been able to have as many flights going as I have now.

I don't think there's anyone who disagrees. The community is amazing. If you ask help you get help. No "noob learn to play" or "haxxor" when you do something others haven't done.

There is an enormous amount of mods that are well polished and add to the game without changing the core game.

And I have never heard anythinh bad about Squad and as I see it, they are probably the best dev team there is.

Exactly. It's rare to get the trolls here. Perhaps they are worried about not knowing about thrust to weight ratios and are scared of all us space nerds hehe.

The only thing bad I can think about Squad is that they have released a game that is the equivalent of digital crack cocaine. Start playing a session of KSP and suddenly the day's vanished. I have to set alarms to remind me to eat hehe.

Honestly, I think KSP will become the greatest game of all time someday. Better than stealing cars in GTA V, or experiencing WWII in Battlefield. The game is just damn amazing, and when it's finished, it will be incredible- asteroids, money, MULTIPLAYER, but most of all, the mods!

I've played 140 hours and haven't used any mods other than plugins. That's not good because I'm still going to have to try all of these mods out.

I may have to sue Squad. They should of let me know ahead of time that they would make a game this great. I wasted a lot of money on other games thinking I would play them someday. I'm not sure that will ever happen now. They owe me for all of those games gathering digital dust.

Same here :) I have bought a bunch of other games during the Steam Summer Sale, and this is the only one I ever play. Every time I now see a game I already bought but have never started to be cheaper now than at the time I bought it, I get mad at KSP for stealing my money :D

I am utterly convinced that the technological singularity is going to come about because the modding community in KSP decides to build an AI for Jebediah.

Seriously, the modding community for this game is a secret cult of computer wizards or something.

By its very nature, KSP requires a basic level of scientific knowledge and engineering prowess, otherwise you just won't play it for very long... I think that alone lends the game appeal to a smarter class of gamer. Not to go all Glorious PC Gaming Master Race on you guys, but you're just not going to find the kind of gamer who only indulges in Call of Duty or Madden on a regular basis pitching for this game, even though they could conceivably get much more fun out of it for a longer period of time.

And the modding community is just so incredible for this game. So many mods out there available but what I find most impressive is that the game provides so many tools for mod makers to fully integrate their mods with the core gameplay, and allow seamless merging with other mods. And the fact that mods are so easy to add and remove is a testament to how much faith the developers have in our intelligence and ability to use and modify the files directly. How many other games out there let you change entire facets of the game with just a few lines in the .cfg file?

KSP has some incredible learning potential, and makes players think about solving problems rather than mindlessly turning their brain off and pressing buttons with no mental feedback. I mean... Sometimes you want that, but it's nice to know I have such an actively intelligent game in my collection. It's nice!

my complain about this game is that I now feel... Irritated(?) every time I watch a space movie and they thrust towards the planet in order to decend

Works fine if you thrust enough, burning radially adjusts your eccentricity so if you burn enough your Pe drops below the surface. It's faster as well, you hit Pe in a quarter of an orbit instead of half.

It is, of course, the most inefficient way possible to adjust your Pe. But in most Scifi movies they seem to have infinite fuel enabled anyway.

Yea. I am approaching 900 hours by my own estimation, and the challenges that can be completed exceed my boredom! This game is as big (or as small) as you want it to be, and I love that! New content can only enhance the game. I am truly addicted to mods, and love their integration and enhancement.

Glad you're back and still enjoying yourself, NeoMorph. Was a bit worried at the thread title until I came in here. Trickster.

But yeah, I agree 100%. I'm on a hiatus myself; haven't played in several months, but it's got that special vibe to it that keeps me coming back every once in a while, because you just can't stay away from space for too long.

i hope ksp will ever be ksp. i remember games like need for speed, where was a genius game series. it was awesome and changed to fast and fourious tuning play online for free trash. in early releases it had more functionallity than yet.

so please keep ksp as that was it is, near to the community, oriented on learning with fun (or fun with learning, depends on your view) and so on. i have not the right words, but i think everybody know what i mean, what can happend with games during "growing up".

Got to agree, stupid hours spent and haven't even play much with the main mods out there.

I got frustrated with learning KSp at the beginning. There are certainly areas that once they "click", it gets even more awesome. I am starting to play it with my daughter (8 years old). She loves watching KSP on Twitch and wants to play it. I find it hard to explain some of the more complex areas that KSP is portraying, but as long as I keep to the basics, she loves designing and trying new rockets.

It's on 0.23, so my aim is that in 5 years I am still playing this game and hope the community around this game do not get bored and move on.

Here's to the many hours of watching Youtube videos/Twitch and playing the game :)

Nice that you mention it. Freespace 2 is one of my favorite games. The Source Code Project Version is amazing and still maintained.

Anyway, KSP counts for me as one of the best games ever made which is to a large extend because of the exceptional modding community. And i also like how this game is educational without really being set out to be.

Well, the game is HARD. 'Learn to play' is what you're trying to do. You've obviously gotten stuck and come for advice or help. Not like there's a hand-holding tutorial note.

It's not competitive, there's no reason to drag people down.

Otherwise, the game itself turns away the majority because it's not just point and shoot. It involves careful planning and rewards knowledge.

Thumbs up to the folk here, defiinitely friendly and helpful. Nice change from a prominent combat flight simulator forum I regularly view. :)

Wow good timing from my above post .... lol

Yep, attracts a more mature crowd IMHO

Help is the only reason I'm even on this forum. The game was devastatingly hard for me when I first got into it. I dropped it and picked it up quite a few times before I finally was able to get into it, with the help of the incredible tutorials this community offers.

Now, I'm not saying I'm an expert, but I've gotten pretty good and written/recorded a few tutorials of my own. It's definitely not a game you can jump into and immediately understand, and that's part of why it's so enticing to keep coming back to it.

I agree with all. I'm running like 15 mods and it's a totally different game (but it doesn't feel like it!)!

However: the one and only gigantic problem that, if solved, would push the boundaries of amazingness beyond comprehension would be: 64 bit build. Shame it's Unity's fault... *sigh*
