Bouncing KerbaLLs?

So, in a number of videos now, I've been seeing kerbals bounce when falling down from high

altitudes, and at ridiculous speeds... At the other hand, my kerbals have this weird habit of

exploding when trying to climb a ladder, or such. So, what's the catch?

I would also like to know how kerbals manage to survive, and have been curious today.

In the Videos they are either using an older version of KSP, or the Kerbals are landing on their heads.

I can land a kerbal on his head and.... what?! Elaborate, please.

For some reason, kerbals have really strong heads/helmets. I'm pretty sure some one has deorbited a kerbal over kerbin, and they landed on their head, so they survived. It's just, the chances of them landing like that it small...

Yes, back around .16 I sent a Kerbal on an orbit-to-surface dive. He landed on his head at 300+m/s and bounced up around 600m, but was not so lucky on his second impact and went poof.
