The Bubble Ship from Oblivion! 2-Kerbal VTOL

Hey there!

I spent a lot of time designing this to get it to look right. It came out pretty close! The cockpit was tough to get right, but since we don't have glass in the game I settled on this setup

AG 1 = Horizontal Jets

AG 2 = VTOL Jets

AG 3 = Ladders

G = Landing Legs

F/SAS = Antennas

After loading the craft, be sure to click on the probe module on the front (underneath those guns/radial rocket engines) and click "Control From Here" to have control facing the right direction!

Other than that, nothing quirky about the ship. The thrust limiters are turned down on the horizontal jets. They are above the CoM so keep that in mind if you adjust the thrust limiter at all.

I might try to make an SSTO version in the future! FOr now though I'm content with just zipping around the KSC in it haha.

I think you did good work witch puttong this together with only stock parts... for a moment i thought tahtyou used some custom cocpit.

That looks great! Something that really, really annoyed about the ship in the film was the tail rotor, I mean why? There's no main rotor torque to overcome so having it there it just silly, although not as silly as the plot I suppose.

Oh for sure, and I encourage anyone with that mod to modify this design so I can see what it would look like! THe only reason I don't use mods for these things is so that more people will be able to d/l them and take them for a spin

Me too! Although it didn't come across my mind until I started adding the tail to this design that I thought something was off haha. I guess Look > Realism for a lot of sci-fi designs though.

I had to actually disable the torque on it so that it wouldn't make the whole design act weird in flight.

In a practical scene, it would provide a yaw for the ship to steer it (I guess you could roll, then pitch, but that would be more complicated.)

Ummmm.... It was mainly supposed to look like the little hub on the original design (the place where all the landing legs connect to) but came out to be way bigger than what the original looked like. About 60% of the design was built off of that section though so redesigning it would take a big overhaul. In the end, it does add extra control, but not a ton since it is very close to the CoM (reaction wheels have more effect the further they are away from the CoM!)

Ya I struggled with VTOL design at first . This design actually uses a VTOL building technique that I talked about in my VTOL building tutorial. You should check it out if you're interested!
