The Kraken Drive is Showing It's Worth

I went through my entire design process not knowing this O_o

But I did manage to make a miniaturized version of a Kraken drive.

Which I then made into a working engine.

and incorporated into my spaceplane design

Later, I made a final prototype. The great thing about the engine is that it doesn't break down. It is exceptionally reliable.

Now it seems, I am going into slightly more dangerous areas of Kraken physics. I've christened this ship Event Horizon.

I'll be back with results on this one.

I request the craft file of the 2nd and 3rd spaceplanes displayed (aka the one with no inline docking port+1 kraken drive and the one with 2 kraken drives on the sides)

whenever KSP's physics engine glitches, it is said that the mighty space kraken is to blame.

and if you try to abuse its might (use physics glitches to propel your craft), you are building a kraken drive.

So ANY glitch that allows propulsion is a Kraken Drive? It can take any form?

Not really any glitch, just "Kraken" glitches. In this case it's using the phantom unbalanced forces that can rip your ship apart to provide useful propulsion.

What in the world is a Kraken Drive...

ALERT: WALL OF TEXT DETECTED

It's a method of propulsion powered by bugs, so to speak. The basic design for a kraken drive is this: 4(or more) landing legs and a 2.5m reaction wheel part, with a plate between them. It is powered by the fact that since the landing legs (when deployed) clip through the reaction wheel part, causing them wanting to move and break. But, the plate prevents this, so you get (if it's placed JUUUUUST right) 18G's maximum power. There are smaller 1m drives that fit on SSTOs; however these are more complex and have less power (8G's).

It already took the life of Nedlorf Kerman.

That rocket let him on a suborbital hop with a 75km apoapsis. He then "circularized" using the K-Drive in his ship.

But when he turned the K-Drive on again to raise the periapsis, the device snapped off from the capsule, leaving him with no power generation and no means of getting home.

He was a brave little guy.

No! You could have saved him! Whhyyyyyy..... -sniff-

Hahahaha.... Poor guy.... I lost my first Kerbal last night... He was a brave soul... He's MIA though, so there is still hope!

I've used a modified version of Levelord's K Drive to upgrade my Bullet SSTO to the Bullet K.

fgPtz7f.jpg

It is extremely reliable. Those micro landing legs don't seem to break! It's only obvious flaw is the same as the other K drives; don't slow down below 700 m/s. To remove the K drive and stick it on other craft simply click on the control ring and make it a sub-assembly.

A better picture of the drive.

Im really surprised by kraken drive. I dont know how it Works but,Can I make space plane with it?

From my admittedly limited experience with it, they have unusual properties (beyond just being glitch-powered freaks of the physics engine's shortcomings I mean). They sometimes seem to perform differently based on whether they are in an atmosphere or not.

As for how they work, they basically just take advantage of the fact that in certain instances, the KSP engine does not always calculate/register the equal and opposite reaction to an action. Specifically, this seems to happen with landing leg parts sometimes if you wedge the foot right in between two things.

I can see something like "WE'RE LOSING CONTAINMENT! THE KRAKEN IS LOOSE! THE KRAKEN IS LOOSE!"

http://manilovefilms.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/ghostbusters1984.jpg

In a challenge topic for making the longest ship, I basically invented the kraken's tentacle when I used Infernal Robotics hinges to unfold an exceptionally long vessel that is neatly folded up in the hangar.

Containment is not just loose/gone, it already has a tentacle in our domain.

Or alternatively, we have now already gotten the parts necessary to create the Mecha-Kraken, which is to enter combat with the Kraken, Godzilla style. Whatever the outcome, Kerbin will be torn a new one.

Neat, nice and compact.

What exactly occurs below 700 m/s ? Do the landing legs break, Does it become nonfunctional, or does it experience a rapid unplanned dissasembly event? Or is that the speed which it transitiopns modes and thus causes destruction that way?

I meant slow down from above 700 m/s to below 700 m/s. If you cross that threshold everything seems to break. Kraken containment is lost. It's something to do with the physics. You can still use it below 700 m/s but it doesn't do much. The JD drive seems to give you more of an anti-gravity affect at low speeds although I found the leg breaks too often. :(

I tried some of the example kraken drives and used them as subassemblies. I can do well with about 5m/s of thrust at launch making it rather stable for hovering. But the Kraken escapes it's cage when i try to use it as a booster for a craft in orbit. only getting about 12 delta per pulse and maybe 2 or 3 pulses before the kraken leaves.

Must not like having to push such a load.

I have the general theory in mind, but are there any videos of how it's assembled? I'm a little (quite a bit really) foggy on the actual implementation and construction.

I know how a nuclear bomb works, and how to build one in theory, but... yeah... something like that.
