Tried to land on Eve

Recommended Posts

Just finally managed to make it to Eve. Aerobraked into the atmosphere, everything seemed to go well, parachutes semi-deployed, then... apparently they ripped right off the craft.

I was using two Mk-2 Radial parachutes. Is this not enough? Do I need an engine to slow down further?

A Ship beeing ripped apart by eve? Thats inconvenient... because Eve's atmosphere is so thick, that you will be sloved down enough to have a save chute deployment.

Allthough... did you tweak the chute to open at a higher altitude?

You might not want that when you are still travelling too fast. Parachute-deployment is a pretty violent activity in KSP :)

Landing on eve with anything big enough to return a manned capsule is a bit tricky, I had that same problem with it as well. I had drogue chutes and then flicked on the engines just as the main chutes were about to deploy to ease the shock, that's what worked for me.

If you do not want to repeat the whole mission with a different craft (and still have a quicksave from before the landing :P ) you could try entering the upper atmosphere and do some aerobreaking orbits until the vessel does not leave the atmosphere again and "lands itself". Activate the chutes at <1000m/s while still high up and make sure they will not completely open before you are <100m/s.

Burn a bit or try to steer the vessel during its decent - last one might only make sense if you are using FAR.

You might also install a mod that lets the drag of the chutes not jump to full force but increase over a few seconds.

I do not know if it safe to install and then use an existing craft - again: quicksave!

Parachutes opens and stops your ship to somewhat 10m/s immediately. So you might imagine what g your ship is experiencing. It's quite simple to avoid this with your current ship if you still have a save in the orbit.

1. Alter chutes to open as high as possible and fully deploy as low as possible. I don't remember setup now - I think lowest atmosphere pressure and lowest altitude. Don't worry atmosphere of EVE will slow you down without chutes to <100m/s easily.

2. Alter chutes to deploy at different time=altitude. I think 20m gap will do just fine.

Note that this might not help if your chutes are attached to some easy breakable parts. When landing bigger ships you should think of attaching chutes to the lower part of the ship also.
