Should I stick with the KSP store version?

The Steam version can do this too, how many times do we have to go over this? Or is this simply an issue of people who don't bother reading a thread before commenting?

Most people just click "next" without reading. I only just noticed 1 week ago I could choose an installation directory for a game with Steam (I don't use it much). My son has know for quite a while, since he has an old machine with almost no disk space on C:

It's not even that, you can literally copy the entire "Kerbal Space Program" directory from your Steam install folder to anywhere you want and it will work perfectly fine; there is no difference between the store copy and the Steam copy aside from the delivery method. I don't know how this myth of having your Steam copy stuck in the Steam install folder got started but I do know that it's people who don't read who continue to propagate it.

They really need to make a sticky saying that the steam version is the same as the store version, the only two differences being, like you said, delivery method and the auto-updating.

I don't know where you heard that but it's completely wrong. The Steam version is exactly the same as the store version besides the method of delivery.

Well, a lot of people leave their Steam games in the Steam folder. Hence, it's harder to find than a folder on you desktop, therefore harder to stick mods in.

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You could always put the folder on your desktop, or a shortcut leading to the folder. Even so, it's not hard to put mods in the game. Leaving the folder in the steam directory doesn't make modding harder. I should know, I have it on steam.

I fail to see how that makes the Steam version any different than the store version. On the one hand a piece of software delivers the package and you can move/copy it to another location as desired, and on the other hand you download a package, unpack it, and then move/copy it to another location as desired. It's silly to maintain that there is a difference in delivery versions and that one is somehow harder to use than the other because you refuse to move/copy yours somewhere else.

  • 2 weeks later...

the only difference is...

your download speed from SQUAD's server on the release date will be terribly slow while the speed for VALVE's server is fast.

so, i dont know why people dont switch to steam.

i switched long ago.

Steam downloads the game to your computer, the same way the store does. You can also choose where you want it, so if you have all your games in the Games folder, put it there. You don't require Steam in the background, that's only for games that integrate Steam into them, so you can literally just go to the folder and launch KSP from there. You don't need to have internet to play KSP on Steam, because it has an offline mode. Steam lets you see how long you've been playing for, and has the ability to upload PICTURES to the cloud. I don't see the problem with Steam at all. Just choose whatever you want. If you don't use Steam for anything else, you don't have to. But if you have every single game of yours on Steam, why not add KSP to that list?

Anyone who can't find the folder where a Steam game is needs to learn more about computers.

Its all a matter of preference. If you already use Steam (or plan to use it in the future), you should get KSP via Steam. If you don't use Steam (and don't intend to use it in the future), get it at the Squad store. I happened to have Steam when I learned about a Steam sale and bought it then, based on a recommendation by another KSP player. So its all up to you. No difference in practical terms.

I don't have a "store" account, so correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Squad store provide all KSP versions? Steam allows you to use only two last versions (current ad previous).

I'd go with the store version. I went with steam but regret it since I can't have different copies for modded and stock gameplay.

I have two versions of KSP on my computer, one stock one modded. And I run Steam.

The trick is go to your steam folder, copy the KSP folder, then paste that new folder where you want it, and you know what... a SECOND install of KSP is there, no autoupdates no need to have anything else, steam wont mess with anything not linked to it or in the Steam folder.

For me:

I could buy KSP with my existing account, instead of having to create another account with another vendor holding my credit card details.

Autoupdates are nice (but maybe not for KSP, depending on how much they break).

Screenshots directly to the Steam cloud, with the same procedure in different games (Steam overlay has a dedicated screenshot key and a semi-automatic uploader).

There is a big social aspect to Steam, but I don't use it; for me it's just a very convenient digital delivery platform for games which I can't get other ways because there's no local distributor (see the username :) )

Is it worth signing up to Steam for KSP? I would probably say no. Is it worth getting KSP through Steam if you already use Steam? Sure.

One advantage of Steam distribution is their server infrastructure is more robust than that of the KSP store. If the ARM update goes anything like some previous updates, it will be hit or miss after release at the store as their servers get hammered. It will be a minor blip in traffic for Steam.
