Lost science on rescue

Recommended Posts

I'm playing career mode and Jeb made it safely onto to the Mun and did some science. (Yay!) But he wasted too much fuel landing, so he couldn't get back. (Boo!) I got him into a stable Munar orbit and sent an unmanned rescue rocket for him. A dicey 500m spacewalk later, he was on board Rescue I and (barely) got back home.(Yay!) But the science he did, except for some "personal" reports (EVA) didn't recover. (Boo!) I assume they are still on the original capsule. Is there any way to remove stored science from the command pod and take it home? Or should I just forget it and try a new Mun mission with better Delta V planning?

Right click the science experiments and capsules while in EVA to remove the data :)

I did remove the data from the experiments while on the surface. So if I go back to the abandoned capsule, I can right-click it and gather the science?

You'll need a mission to recover the old data. Rendezvous with the old craft, EVA over, take the data out of the old capsule and any experiments, and EVA back to the new mission.

Then if you like you could land the new mission in a different biome for more science, or just head back to Kerbin.

I'd say go for the recovery, it'll give you some good rendezvous and EVA practice.

You'd have to fly a rendezvous in Mun orbit, and if the original ship didn't have a docking ring, you'd have to have a Kerbal ferry data back and forth while constantly fiddling with RCS to keep the ships from drifting too far apart. All things considered, it would be much easier to forget about that ship and fly the whole mission over again with a craft that has the range to make the roundtrip.

A two-kerbal mission, or a manned mission with probe core backup, would work well for that. Get to maybe 50m away and dead stop, EVA over, if there's too much drift board the craft and see where it went, fix position if need be, EVA back.

The fun part is if you can turn your EVA mission into a debris deorbit mission...

On a similar note, I have a Minmus mission that ran out of electricity so Jeb is stuck on the surface. I was going to gather the stored science out of the capsule, but I don't see the option to remove it, only to store. He's EVA, but not in flight. Would that make a difference?
