Wider landing legs

Recommended Posts

All of the stock landing legs are pretty tall. This is good when you've got to clear a large engine bell but bad if you're landing on uneven terrain and want your center of mass to be as close to the ground as possible.

I suggest adding stock landing legs that fold out wider than the current ones, or the ability to tweak the existing legs so that they fold out to a wider base.

Lots of real life space craft have used landing legs that are wide rather than tall.

Examples:

Viking 1 & 2

Cheers.

Or maybe the stubby legs don't have to fold out at all, swapping that trait to be a lot more sturdy. Like being able to withstand 20mps impacts i guess. (I wouldn't know what's not safe because I always am :P)

If you need a wider base, there really isn't much preventing you from building your own wide base to put the legs on. You needn't even use the stock landing legs at all; you can easily use the trusses and cubic struts to create your own landing legs, though they'll not be able to animate.

Well the point is that I'd like them to fold out so they can be tucked away nicely when not in use.

Simply rotate the leg and angle it outwards, I often do this with the large landing legs when I'm using a small engine and it gives me a much wider base. That being said due to the fact that I'm landing a 4-5 tonne craft on legs designed for much heavier loads which are angled outwards means landings can be slightly firm to say the least
