S3 Engine Clusters

Recommended Posts

Post everything and anything related to engine clusters involving size 3 tanks.

A note to somebody... this thread is not about .23.5, it's not about asteroids, and it's not about the new parts. It's about construction techniques.

04/05/14:

So, because this thread got moved anyway, and is now in "Gameplay Questions and Tutorials" (I don't know I didn't move it), I feel I should restate things in the form of a question.

Do you have any ideas and/or info related to engine clusters involving size 3 tanks?

And its open ended, so you can't really completely answer it...

This is a revision on previous data.

Thrust for thrust, this is how the KR-2L and a LV-T30 cluster compare.

At a thrust to weight ratio of 2, the LV-T30 cluster is better below 6.799km.

At a thrust to weight ratio of 1, the LV-T30 cluster is better below 7.194km

In practice it would be most efficient to use a LV-T30 cluster below 7km, and the KR-2L-30 above.

Thrust was used to scale LV-T30 mass with that of the KR-2L. Additionally I added the mass of one radial attachment point per LV-T30.

Total LV-T30 mass = ((KR-2L thrust/LV-T30 thrust)*LV-T30 mass)+((KR-2L thrust/LV-T30 thrust)*radial attachment point mass)

Fuel mass and payload mass were split evenly according to TWR.

Full fuel mass & payload = ((2500/TWR)-engine mass)/2

Empty fuel mass = (((2500/TWR)-engine mass)/2)/8.2

Altitude at which the KR-2L produces an equal Isp to the LV-T30, altitude 8.047km.

KR-2L = Blue

LV-T30 = Red

KS-25x4 & KR-1x2 = Yellow

Mainsail = Green

x = Altitude

y = Isp
