Finally gone interplanetary...

Hey guys, just wanted to express how awesome I feel right now. I have been fiddle faddling with KSP for about 3 months now, and have always been shortcame on interplanetary travel, all of my science came from the Mun and Minmus until now! I started using sandbox because I know how the game works, and I decided that I would finally stop waddling around with single rockets, and decided to create a rocket in space! Once I created the interplanetary rocket, composed of one lander, a tug, and an end cap, I set off for my destination; Duna, more importantly, Ike. I figured that landing on Duna would be a little bit out of my league at first, and decided, "you know what, let's go to Ike." So I launched at the correct planetary positions (that much I knew how to do) and set off for Duna, I snapped some pics leaving Kerbin, and during the flight for you guys I will probably insert them in this post. Once I got to Duna, I aerobreaked at about 20km into the atmosphere, and got into a capture. After fine tuning it, I dispatched two probes that I brought with me. Funny things: they didn't have enough electric charge to last them in their decent without solar panels, and half of the landing gears were upside down (FAIL). Brushing that aside, I set up a burn for my lander, after detaching it from the tug, and set out for Ike. After getting into orbit, (easy enough) I decended and landed on the surface, where they stayed for about a year waiting for the next planetary alignment to occur. Just before the alignment, I set off of Ike, the crew of 2 flew back to Low Duna Orbit, alongside the tug, and performed the rendezvous. Once that was complete, I set out for home, and after 2 whole years waiting, I used Kerbin's atmosphere to slow me down, and dropped me into orbit. Once again a roadblock, SOMEONE forgot to pack parachutes! (I blame Jebediah!) So, I quickly built a craft, brought it into orbit, close to the Ike One, and transfered the crew via EVA. Then I simply deorbited the craft, and landed them safely at Sea!

Thanks for reading, I just couldnt help but post it because I am so happy I finally did something else I haven't done in KSP! Thanks devs for making such an amazing game

Couldn't get pics to work but check them out in my Imgur Album!

I made it to other planets (and, in some cases, returned) in previous versions, but thanks to the optimisations and larger parts, I’m able to do it more regularly. I built an Apollo-style mission to the Mun, but after ending up in orbit with a full tank of fuel I went on to Ike on a sub-optimal transfer on Day 1. Return from Ike will happen when I can stop the Kerbals ragdolling on the surface; in the meantime I’m going to see how many places I can go to.

I wonder whether the 3.75 meter parts are useful for Eve ascents?

Well, I wouldn't use them to get up from Eve, but they'll certainly make it easier to get the lander over there.

On topic: Congratulations, the first interplanetary mission is the most difficult, but also one of the most rewarding missions you can do.

Weird. The interplanetary I'm working on right now has a deadly orbital stage floating around in the same orbit. I have no idea why it didn't delete when it hit the atmosphere but it surely is deadly when you switch to it accidentally. It makes it so I can't go to space center or anything. It's just like that danny glitch.

Congratulations! I remember my first interplanetary mission when duna finally came into sight. :)

And dont forget all those cool moons! I will launch to Eve and Jool next. Jool will be the first time.

Congratulations, what planet is next to be conquered by force explored?

I am currently setting up a jool mission, with five seperate 2.5 meter landers for each different moon it is already massive, and I am working on the last 2 landers, each have their own seperate flag and i have yet to make a tug stage to it but I will!

I've had limited success with multiple nuclear engines, the low TWR means I tend to build very small interstellar craft as a result. So I'll give you credit for sticking with them, even with how painfully slow they are. Congratulations on going where no Kerbal had gone before!

Congrats! I remember when I first went interplanetary... I had put it of for so long because I was scared I would end up in an infinite Kerbol orbit haha. The first is always the most tense. :)

I just completed my first interplanetary mission myself, tho it didn't go nearly as well as yours did. Bob and Bill are successfully orbiting Eve though. I was going to do Duna, but the Eve window opened up much sooner. I didn't get that much science, but I got a lot of experience! Now I've got to go back, get the science and bring back Bob and Bill.

I need to remember to send Kerbals other than Bob, Bill, and Jeb to indefinite missions like that.

Same here. Just put a kerbal on Duna yesterday. The atmosphere issue is rather tricky.

I also sent Jeb on a sightseeing mission to Eve. My intent was to land on Gilly, but I wound up entering the system on an opposite orbit from Gilly. Too much delta-v to pull that one off.

Even using the new engines, I could get back to Kerbin with just a small amount of reserve fuel, so I don't think I'll be going farther out yet.

My rocket actually had a TWR of about 3 meters per second per second, I was very happy with how it turned out!

Awesome! Great job!

I've started working on how to get a Kerbal to Duna and return safely. I've sent probes crashing into both Duna and Eve. I also managed to get a probe to fly by Moho, but so far none of my efforts have had sufficient fuel for landing and return. I think I'm just very inefficient in my launch windows.

Gratz on the IP travel! Shame about the couple of missing parts on your rockets, but we all learn from our mistakes!

I love Duna, it's my favourite; on my modded save I've abandoned Kerbin and launch all my ships from Duna, it's the best planet! (Expl. Launchpads ftw)

Lucky bugger, I can never find the damn planet! It's the only one I haven't been to...
