Programs for making parts

Blender seems to be the most popular for modeling and happens to be free. Gimp is also free and works well for making textures. (I prefer photoshop though) lastly you'll need unity to export your part into the game. (This is also free)

My workflow is as follows:

- Blender for modelling the parts and unwrapping textures

- Adobe Fireworks CS6 for drawing textures

- Adobe Photoshop CS6 and the nDo plugin for generating normal maps

- Unity and KSP PartTools for exporting the parts to a format the game itself can read

I use Blender to also create the diffuse (=color), ambient lighting, and normal maps. I then combine the diffuse and ambient maps with Photoshop (just two simple layers combined with "Multiply".) Then it's on to Unity and KSP PartTools the regular way.
