A cool idea i just had

Recommended Posts

Ever tabbed out of ksp and looked at the mods page and seen something cool? What if there was a button which made ksp scan for mods that it didn't load and then loads them without having to close it and wait for it to load again? Im sure im not alone in saying that ksp takes AGES to load.

I'm reading Game of Thrones, so the loading screen isn't long enough.... Need more mods! :D

That's kind of what a Mod API would do, which KSP doesn't have, and I don't know whether its planned to have one. Besides, you'd still have to have a load screen somewhere, it has to load all the parts/plugins!

Sure thing, that'd be cool. A quick tip by the way: To make the waiting time shorter, I usually do alt+enter as soon as KSP loads to put it in windowed mode, then go do something else. Just alt-tabbing out of fullscreen KSP doesn't work because then the process priority goes down or something like that, and then it takes even more ages to load.

I doubt that's possible.

This game loads all assats on launch. That means it doesn't load anything after launch. So no, it can't install a completely new mod while running.

And even if it was possible, it MIGHT be used once or twice by someone, and than never again. How often do you realize DURING the game that you need a specific mod for something? I did it once, with root select.

It's not worth the difficulty of coding your suggestion, just to save the 10 minutes it would take to reload the game

I've been playing modded games for, oh goodness, ten years starting when the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind came out. Every game that I have ever played, from Morrowind to KSP, that had mod support loads painfully slow when loaded down with a significant number of mods. In order to implement mod support right, the game has to load everything up front on startup, which means a slow startup time. The alternative is not pretty; the alternative is loading assets on the fly while you're playing the game, and that would lead to incredibly poor performance.

I'm simply thankful for the fact that KSP is a good stable platform to load mods on top of.

If KSP is taking excessively long to load, you may be running into a Unity bug which hangs the game for a long time on loading if you have unused virtual network adapters (e.g., Hamachi) installed. Try disabling them via Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Show Network Adapters.

you know you can re-init the database from inside the game with the alt+f12 menu, its still slow but not as slow as starting it up again.

This exactly. It doesn't work for plugins, but new parts will be loaded just fine.

Hmm I'll look into that I do have hamachi installed
