Definitely recommending you stick with it. It does get off to a bit of a slow start, but it'll get rolling after the first few episodes.

Also, if you like Planetes and find yourself working for more, you might enjoy another one called Space Brothers as well. That one has some of the best characterization I've seen in an anime to date, as well as an interesting look at what the future might have looked like had the Constellation Program not been cancelled.

I've also recently come across Planetes, and I must say it does a lovely job of capturing what a future 'space culture' could be like: Nothing too glitzy and gleaming like the impossibly far off Star Trek, but a real nuts and bolts take on spaceflight, with a few realism allowances for story considerations. It does suffer from some standard anime problems, notably some immaturity in character behaviour, but it's far outweighed by the positives. If people are having a hard time breaking into anime (that included me until a year or so ago) then this series would be a great start.

I enjoyed Space Brothers a great deal more then Planetes. Hope it gets continued soon.
