SpaceX CEO Elon Musk unveiled the newest edition of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. This is what the future looks like, say goodbye to the white/gray blocky oldschool look of NASA.

The DragonV2 flight could achieve its first unmanned flight as soon as late 2015, and its first crewed flight as soon as mid-2016.

Excuse me, I think I need to change my pants :sticktongue:

Short version: That is one beautiful spacecraft. She just makes you want to caress her with your fingertips, then strap her on and fly her into space. I am envious of the ones who will get to fly her but so incredibly happy the Dream of Spaceflight is alive.

Long version: I am lucky enough to have been born in the Year of Sputnik. I have spent my entire life in the Space Age witnessing humankind's greatest achievements. I am deeply humbled by what has been accomplished by individuals with the will to realize their dreams. And it has been individuals who have driven us and themselves to reach further, to push the envelope of what is possible time and time again. Even national space programs be they American, Russian, Chinese, etc all have individuals at their core whose dream of spaceflight is what made and still makes this such an incredibly exciting time to live.

Last night after watching the unveiling, I then watched again the Discovery Channel documentary on Spaceship One (Black Sky) and then several youtube videos of the ISS - Soyuz dockings, Dragon One captures, Spacewalks. And I was struck by the sheer poetry of human and machine, the orchestral concert of spaceflight, the unbound beauty of our World and the deep blackness of the Unknown calling us to explore.

And as I write this I am so aware that in our KSP community we have members who are involved with NASA, JPL, Copenhagen Suborbitals and other spaceflight initatives across the globe. I am also aware that among us are the future Cosmonauts who will fly spacecraft like the Dragon 2 or the next generation and will land on the other worlds of our vast Solar system. That is truely awe inspiring.

It is an incredibly and wonderous time to be alive. Thanks for reading. Now go launch something will, ya?

I hope this doesn't crush Dream Chaser's chances, I really like Dream Chaser. :(

Dream Chaser is what the shuttle was intended to be, or at least the russian concept of a shuttle. Their proposed spaceplanes are always rather minimalistic and simple. Some examples are the MIG-105, the Klipper, and the MAKS shuttle (little thing on top of the plane). These have all served as an inspiration for the Dream Chaser, so I think they're on track. Besides, congress loves iconic stuff, and planes are really easy to remember. :)

I agree, liked the Dragon V1 a lot more. V2 looks...too futuristic for me. Not that I would even consider not hitching a ride in it :P

am i the only one wondering about, in the original video, the service module is partially covered in solar panels?

It is half covered in solar panels. The other side acts as a radiator. What are you wondering about?

The trunk is disposable, so cost is the driving factor here. These panels are cheaper and more reliable than the foldable panels with their disposable covers.
