Long Live SpacePort!

Space Port was a unique place, free from any other game but ksp. It had potential but it was eventually shut down and replaced by Curse. Sure when you typed "Kethane" or "FAR" there were 50 of the same craft and the mod buried in between but thats what made it special. How awesome would it be in future ksp to have a in game spaceport with the top mods right there for download in game and have the top crafts on the other tab. Built in install/uninstall button, better filtering between mods and crafts, a little UI change to fit ksp current part theme, and a wipe out of the duplicate crafts . All Spaceport needed was a clear out and polishing, and i hate to see it go.

Spaceport was a horrible mess without words, Wordpress is by far a terrible, terrible option for it. I'm not sad to see it go, I'm actually extremely happy that it's been turned off, it should've been done months ago. I'm just sad that the Squad solution is Curse.

From my perspective, Spaceport needed to be dropped, at least to some degree.

Things it really needed:

-A stable code base to work from. Not Wordpress.

-Dedicated .craft storage. No more crafts thrown in everywhere.

-Tag Police. Yank things that just keep spamming tags to get noticed.

-Uploading files takes you to the file page immediately after the upload, preventing the two or three accidental spam, and reducing the 50-count fart bomb.

-Update the Popular Files page once in a while.

-Dedicated tagging for older/newer versions.

Things it needed removed:

-The comment system. No one ever seemed to read it, nor reply to it.

Things it had right:

-Surprisingly, it was compartmentalized to some degree, offering space for parts based on KSP categories. It was broken because people spewed every tag.

Things that needed to change, or be added to work with changes:

-Tag system. Perhaps offering "Part Pack" "Craft File" and "Plugin-Based" as over-all tags would reduce spam by allowing the next part to work.

-Exclusions. Allow people to block tags, like "Craft File" so that they don't have to see the flood of airplanes that only get to use the B9 tag because they had one B9 part in them.

-Search System. Goes with Exclusions, but refining the search system would have helped. It should have sorted "Relevance First" rather than "Most Recently Loaded" and thereby searching Firespitter or B9 or KW Rocketry would give you the main files first, then anything else after.

-Dedicated "Go to Forum Page" button.

Well, with that said, I'll say this:

The Spaceport, to some degree, still lives on, but it's not Curse. Curse may be where some modders put their stuff, some use Dropbox or Mediafire, others use the Nexus, and others still use other methods. The Spaceport, we're standing in it. The Forum is the Spaceport.

In this sort of situation, there's rarely a truly "good" solution anyway. At least, not if you also want a solution that succeeds at being "affordable", "easy to implement", and "without baggage". It's generally "choose 2 of 3" if you're lucky. I will miss SpacePort, that said, but not immensely; I know how to find the mods I like via the forums.

*sigh* It seems like every admin is trying to make Curse seem superior... When really Curse is the biggest peace of crap since You're very scary avatar penguin....

You KNOW you're crap isn't working against us.

Admins are just talking to the newbies... Because the newbies KNOW you are authority, and newbies think you are always right.

When you are injecting jackcrap into their heads.

Stop doing this Mods and Admins... This is like taking a crap on someone's grave...

Well... I got that off of my chest.

I'm still at odds with 80% of the users here. I loved Spaceport, it was the only way I knew how to get mods! Curse is a bit confusing for me, so I'm glad I got KER and got out before the Curse mess got started.

I don't understand what's so confusing about Curse. You go to www.curse.com, and there is KSP among featured games.

http://kerbal.curseforge.com

Bam. KSP.

You go to projects, and you have mods and shareables. Unlike insane Spaceport, which mashed all together, had copies and didn't display download count (just to mention the obvious flaws), Curse has a user friendly interface.

http://www.curse.com/ksp-mods/kerbal

It's all there, plenty of info.

I must say, when people started bashing Curse, I was like: "Hey, this must suck worse than Spaceport", and when I went there I was like: "I don't get it, this is perfectly fine".

I yet have to read one argument why is Spaceport better. I'm craving for it.

Uh. I don't like Curse any more than you do. I'm not planning on using it for any of my mods because I really don't like the system. I'm just stating that Spaceport was no better.

Spaceport IS FAAAAAAAR better than Curse.

From someone that has had access to behind the scenes of Spaceport, I can tell you the software used for Spaceport was utter crap. Really there was nearly nothing I could do apart from trying to destroy dupplicate uploads as they came back. We couldn't ban, we couldn't moderate, we couldn't restrict users, we couldn't message people, we couldn't control the content of spaceport. The software was buggy beyond thought, errors would pop up when there were none, causing bazilions of uploads, password resets would break down nearly half the time and it took hours and hours for N3X15 to fix them, the email link was broken, the page counts also were, if you weren't logged in you would get bad views of the statistics, ratings would behave however they wanted and some mods would spawn 1000+ ratings out of nowhere when they had received none, the download server would break every now and then rendering it impossible for anyone to download anything. Trust me, Spaceport was /terrible/. And I'm far from saying Curse is better, but the simple idea that Spaceport was good is so wrong my brain hurts when trying to understand it. Curse is just a very different kind of "bad".

So no, Spaceport was not salvageable. It needed to be dumped as soon as physically possible, and the 30th of May was far too late IMO, it should've been done ages ago. Fixing Spaceport would have literaly meant rewriting it from ground up, because whoever did it clearly had no idea what he was doing and screwed up real bad, and in the end, you're far better off making a new one.

No. Quite simply: No.

Curse is one pile of crap, but Spaceport had to get axed. There was absolutely no way around that. The solution should have been a dedicated in-house system, but apparently a marketing company, too, can fall for a PR speech, so now we're stuck with Curse. Or, well, any of the numerous alternatives. </shameless plug>
